About this deal

At the same time, it was interesting to read about how Juan and his team sought to use non-lethal methods to attack the secret training camp at the abandoned monastery; that was pretty cool and well-written, I thought.

I half-expected some of the team members to die in this novel, especially "minor" or "supporting" characters onboard the Oregon because the author has "the unthinkable" happen - the Oregon is boarded by a hostile force of four enhanced individuals; I expected a bloodbath to occur at one point but it never happened. I also liked how Juan used one of the stolen missiles to take out the other stolen missile (hidden onboard a cargo vessel in an Iranian port. Maybe it would have been acceptable as a standard military action novel, but it does not carry on the enjoyable legacy of the prior Oregon Files novels. He gets beaten badly, has some broken ribs as well as other bruised bones and tissue, but ends up leading a mission. As I said before in my previous book review, a LOVE BOAT is the last thing I want when reading this series. Maurice, the ship's steward, has always been an enigma to me; I have read the books haphazardly, so I have do not know if more about Maurice's background was revealed in prior books. I would recommend reading any one of the dozen novels in the Oregon Files series before Fire Strike. I loved that he was able to use the shotgun shell in the heal of his boot to help him win a later fight.

I've enjoyed reading the series to this point, but unfortunately, I'll have to discontinue the series is just "high-stakes action" all the time. A former British Royal Navy/Chief steward on The Oregon but I always knew there was more to Maurice than meets the eye. My only issue with the story is that Maden did not place the ship Oregon in the center of the action.Clive Cussler was the author of more than eighty books in five bestselling series, including Dirk Pitt®, NUMA Files®, Oregon Files®, Isaac Bell®, and Sam and Remi Fargo®.

It was sad to read about the damage done to the port as I can only assume numerous innocent civilians and military personnel going about their normal business were killed, but it was still a cool moment. While CRISPR has been in the news for a while, this was the first book I've read that uses it as part of the story. While the prior books focused on the ship, its crew and their clandestine operations, this one spends little time on the ship, little time developing the character of the crew, and was not engaging. As you would expect, eventually these come together to form a semi coherent plot, but it was well past the half way point of the book where that happened.

In this book, we get the intro chapter of the book to discover some of Maurice's earlier military history before he retired from the British Navy and joined Juan Cabrillo's crew. When Juan Cabrillo, captain of the Oregon, is hired to extract an undercover operative in Kenya, he finds himself on the trail of a deadly international plot. The author, Mike Maden did a very good job in writing this novel in the true style of the deceased Cussler. The Oregon is not only a vessel but is a main character, an extension of every great character on board. I think I've said this numerous times regarding these Clive Cussler originated books, but they're all good easy reading.I thought the bad guys in this novel did exceptionally well against the Oregon crew even though they really knew nothing about them.
