Although Van Dusen also illustrated the hyper-popular Mercy Watson series penned by Kate DiCamillo about a porcine wonder, the Magee stories are clearly superior as fables. Magee (and his trusty dog, Dee), King Hugo (the royal with the big ego), and Kate DiCamillo’s Mercy Watson. The next thing the two campers know, they are plunging down a mountain, racing down a river, and teetering on the edge of a waterfall! I loved reading this book, the illustrations were amazing and looked very realistic and I liked the rhyming throughout the story. Author/illustrator Chris Van Dusen brings humor, adventure, lively language, and richly colored, kinetic illustrations to all of his children’s books. The camper almost goes down a 50 foot waterfall, but the bear thinks the hitch is a marshmallow, so he grabs it and pulls it to shore before realizing it was a dirty, less-than-tasty, hitch instead. What makes the Magee books even more magnificent is that fact that the text on all 36 pages is written in sweet, humorous and intelligent rhyme.
