About this deal

In honor of National Daisy Day, perhaps this would be a great time to start growing some daisies. Of course, since the day comes at the end of January, in many climate zones it may still be a bit cold to plant them outside. In that case, seeds can be sown indoors in trays or individual pots approximately 8-10 weeks before the date of the last frost. The daisy was classified in 1792 by German botanist Paul Dietrich Giseke, who placed them in the Compositae family (also called the Asteraceae family). However, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew found daisy pollen grains embedded in fossils from over 20 million years ago, which means even dinosaurs were graced with their natural beauty. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew also states that the daisy family is one of the largest plant families, with over 1,600 genera and 23,000 species. A later study found seven new saponins (constituents that have soap-like attributes and lower surface tension) in Daisy flowers. These saponins promote collagen synthesis, without any toxic side-effects. Collagen is the main structural constituent of skin. Therefore, the finding that Daisies contribute to collagen synthesis would explain why they have been used in wound healing. The actual mechanism of how this works, however, is still not known. 8 One type of saponin in Daisy flowers has also been found to inhibit tumours. 7 Kindergarteners now get to join their older sisters through this arm of the Girl Scouts. While there are various genera that daisies fall under, meaning they can have different shapes, sizes, and colors, most typically consist of 15 to 30 petals surrounding a yellow disk. Some of the most common daisy genera include the Oxeye daisy, Gerbera daisy, and the English daisy. Lynne creates all the covers to our books. Gerard’s last recommendation for Daisies is sniffing the juice of the leaves and the roots to clear the head and shift mucus and clearing the eyes. 4 Daisies are recorded in Old English records, as being hung about the house to drive out fleas. 9 The different parts of a Daisy ‘flower’ are more complicated than they appear at first glance. The actual flower head is a grouping of many small individual flowers: white ray florets and the smaller, yellow disc florets in the centre. These can be clearly seen by looking at the flowerheads with a magnifying glass or hand-lense. | Credit: Helen Miller And even though daisies are technically a member of the weed family, they boast beautiful blooms in various hues that make them deserving of their own special day.
