Original Gin is just a little too full of perfume-like floral flavour and spice for me to sip comfortably. This beautiful Gin makes use of our Handcrafted Old Tom Crisp as a base and is then proofed to Navy Strength before being infused with real Butterfly Pea flower for 10 days to produce this fabulous Navy Blue Gin that we hope Lowestoft can be so rightly proud of. The product was first test marketed in Spain, and was then launched in limited quantities internationally in 2012. Juniper, clove, cinnamon and other botanicals are macerated for weeks into three times distilled grain alcohol and subsequently distilled in XIX century copper stills. Royal Blue Gin is a handcrafted gin that is made in small batch copper stills to ensure the quality and to make sure that all Royal Blue Gins have the same distinctive, elegant yet playful taste and colour.

What starts out as a blue gin, with the addition of tonic, changes from blue to purple or pink, depending on the pH of the mixer. Sandy runs the business with the help of his family, Christine in the Office, Jackie in production, Graeme producing the beautiful artwork and Bob in the Distillery. I want to note that the sample bottle I was given for this review was the older bottle style (see below). For a dramatic twist, add a blue violet flower, or even a bright orange nasturtium flower, both of which are edible.Referring to the technical information sheets which I was provided with, I learned that the colour is “derived in part from gardenia flowers and a final infusion with bergamot oil”. With a mixture of traditional and modern botanicals the Gin is Pot Distilled in small batches to create a complex and delicious drink. Blue Slate Gin is a juniper-led London Dry gin, rich with spicy pine leading to an elderflower-citrus heart and a long oak and heather-honey finish.

The more familiar gin aromas of earthy juniper, spicy cardamom, lemon peel and orange citrus lie somewhat behind that floral intensity. With a variety of Scottish Gin experiences available and a number of Scottish spirits related events including whisky tastings, the new distillery has put the spirit of Scotland back into Stirling. Putting his years of distillery experience to good use, Duncan renovated an old outbuilding on their family farm, purchased a traditional alembic copper pot still for making spirits and fitted a bespoke column, making for a lighter, yet vibrant gin.When I add an ice-cube, the strong flavours are muted; but the spiciness of cardamom (tastes like ginger) continues unabated. At the heart of our craft gin is a team of artisans who meticulously test each and every batch before hand bottling, stamping and inspecting before being released for sale. The exquisite blue hue, a rarity in nature’s palette, is derived solely from the blossoms of the Blue Pea plant. In 2018, Stirling Gin acquired and renovated their own premises, ‘The Old Smiddy’ distillery, which is situated under the same towering walls of Stirling Castle. Having already made their mark on the local gin scene in Stirling with their Stirling Gin Festival in 2014, which was met with critical acclaim, June and Cameron McCann noticed one thing was missing – a gin from Stirling with local botanicals.

The Blue Pea blossom mirrors the pH balance of its companion, adjusting its colour to a soft pink due to the tonic’s acidity. A long held ambition to launch their own gin, Shirley and Duncan Morrison purchased a small thirty litre still and began testing and developing recipes using various botanicals, slowly fine tuning what would eventually become their signature Scottish Gin expression.
