About this deal

Stormcast suffer from “First Codex Syndrome” (Well, battletomes in this case) which means whenever a new edition or wave of content comes out, Stormcast always got their rules first. Which means initially they get to be the top of the curve, but drop off as power creep sets in and each subsequent battletome outpaces them. We’re at a point where their Battletome is almost 2 years old as of this writing, which doesn’t sound like a lot on paper except the game has seen an unprecedented pace of new tomes which makes their age hurt more than it might normally. They’re not a completely lost cause though, their flexibility remains unmatched, so if you really can eek out the most out of a unit you can persevere. The Battletome cheth: Well yes, WHF Chaos Warriors. I think/suspect that AoS Chaos Warriors are meant to be a bit more powerful than their Old World predecessors (since the overall scale/power level in AoS is higher), and Stormcast are on par with them by design. They're also Space Marine level if you take Mordhau's word for it.

Another good all-rounder faction. Bonuses for wound are lovely, though the CP abilities are a bit feast or famine. You might drown in CP or get nothing from it. Astral TemplarsThe Celestant-Prime is one of the most powerful beings Sigmar sends to the battlefields to thwart evil and save the human realms! Also known as Lady Arcane, Astreia Solbright is the Lord-Arcanum of the Shimmersouls, the top-ranking Sacrosanct Chamber of the Hammers of Sigmar Stormhost. Renowned for her intellect, Astreia spends her time searching for a cure to a mysterious ailment affecting her warriors – mostly by leading them on endless hunts to slay undead creatures of all kinds. He gets two gryph hounds, which are more useful than ever with the aura of their Warning Cry expanded a bit. Definitely an auto include in a ranged army. Knight-Relictor cheth: ... The Celestant-Prime descended from the heavens like a comet to fight a Godbeast so large its hands were the size of islands, killing it with a single blow that smote the nearby landscape and was, at another time, punted above the clouds and was A-Okay. Based on 40k 9th edition. (here’s hoping we see another AOS series in a couple of years based on Dominion.

Unless Sigmar hung around to Karl Franz' soul for thousands of years, there's no way it's him. This happened before Sigmar became a fully fledged god (when he grabbed his hammer). This happened before the Mortal Realms were a thing. Today, we’re going to be covering a warscroll that I know a lot of people want to know about playing with and playing against. There’s so much about this mythical model to cover that it’s going to take up an entire article. I’m talking about the First of the Stormcast Eternals, the Fantasy Primarch, El Queso Grande, Sigmar’s Pimp-Slap-Made-Manifest: the Celestant-Prime!The leader of the Hammers Draconis is Lord-Celestant Imperius, a martial strategist of incompatible skill born to lead in battle. Once a great mortal emperor who gave everything to fight Chaos, his armies were broken after betrayal by his own brother. Finally, in Astral Templars Vanguard-Palladors and Vanguard-Hunters become battleline. Their ability is very powerful, saving you from needing to use a Hunters of the Heartland battalion and focus those forces on other things. You can even have your Heroes and Monsters benefit, who usually can’t. While a “Monster Hunter” subfaction used to be dicey, in the new Monster heavy meta there is some value here. More importantly in my books is the Soul-charged Icon ability, allowing friendly Stormcast units to re-roll charges if they’re wholly within 12”. Dropping down a unit within 7” (thanks to the Lord-Imperatant) and then rerolling that charge gives you a roughly 82% chance to make that charge. Add in Gavriel Sureheart and you’ve got a ninety nine percent chance to make that charge. Granted, it was a 4” charge anyway, but you know how well you can roll sometimes… I will admit that amongst the 5 other units types mentioned (and many more implied by etcs), I did make a mistake in listing bloodletters, who like even in WHF internally, have varying powerlevels depending on stuff like enviroument, summoning, etc. I own that mistake, its on me. Gotrek does complain alot yes, but fact of the matter is that if everything in OW is leagues below AoS, then why did Gotrek shouting his OW accomplishments scare away a Godbeast?

Command Trait: We Cannot Fail –A 9″ aura around your General grants a 6+ Feel No Pain save for units wholly within. Good stuff. B+ That said, withone hefty batch of new units added to the Stormcast Eternals roster in the recently released, limited edition Dominion box, and several more revealed to be on the way in its wake (step forward, the Vanquishers, Vigilors, Knight-Judicator, and Thunderstrike Chariots), we can expect at least some remixing of Stormcast Eternals tactics in coming months. The army is getting full size, bona fide dragonsand units of dragon-mounted cavalry soon, for one thing. The Stormcast Eternals have a massive roster of character models; four types of battleline troops (not counting the new ones from Dominion); various magical attaché units from the Sacrosanct Chambers; four flavours ofheavy cavalry riding hulking, reptilian Dracoth mounts; and a hell of a lot more besides – and we won’t know which of them are ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ (competitively speaking) until the new book comes out. So, follow your heart for the time being – there’ll always be time to tailor your army later. Stormcast have a lot of units especially in the Leader department. We can’t hope to cover all of them (yet, look out for an updated Start Competing in a few weeks) so we will focus on what’s new and what has changed radically. There are two general trends I noticed: First, Rend has gotten more plentiful. Games Workshop seems to anticipate All out Defense + Mystic Shield + Finest Hour might make things a bit too tanky so we start seeing a lot more Rend -1 where there was none, and Rend -2 where -1 was. So if I don’t mention your favorite unit they may have more rend. Second, everything got more expensive, which is a tough one since Stormcast were not exactly cheap to start with. Don’t worry though, a lot of these units will make their points and this doesn’t put them at much of a disadvantage.Artefact of Power: Parchment of Purity –Heal 1 wound to the bearer each Hero phase. Good for a little extra longevity. B Six, count em six new Battle Tactics which you can choose in addition to the ones in the General’s Handbook. I will confess I have some concerns about these because I’ve seen what they do to 40k. They’re a great idea in theory to encourage players to try and adopt an intended strategy or just add some fluffy options beyond the generic. In reality these are really difficult to keep thinking up new ones and keep them balanced, which leads us to the Haves and Have Nots we were trying to avoid in the move from Second to Third edition. How do these look? Not bad. Stormhost are your unit subfactions. Same disclaimer for other factions: Subfactions are optional, but if you take one you gain a new allegiance ability and command ability in exchange for a mandatory Command Trait and Artefact (Which may or may not be a bad thing, many are quite good). Additionally, all named characters are part of Hammer of Sigmar. You can use unique characters even if your army isn’t Hammers of Sigmar, the characters just don’t gain any benefits from another Stormhost. Stormcast have more subfactions than any other faction to date, with a whopping 8. Most stop at 6, and even Cities of Sigmar only goes up to 7. Who the Celestant-Prime was in a previous life is unknown. All we know for sure is that he was one of mankind’s greatest champions, a great king and warrior from a darkening age. When this champion was taken by Sigmar and forged into the first Stormcast Eternal, he remained incomplete. Without Ghal Maraz he would not awake even with all the power Sigmar infused into the Celestant-Prime. After the Stormcast Eternal legions were set loose upon the Mortal Realms, they searched for Ghal Maraz. When it was eventually found and reunited with Sigmar, The Celestant-Prime arose with thunder so powerful it rolled across all the realms. Ever since then the Celestant-Prime has wielded Ghal Maraz.

A Conclave is a division of the Stormcast Eternals, training and equipping retinues of a Stormhost for specific roles on the battlefield. Stormcast Eternals who have been reforged must go through their Conclave before they are considered fit to resume their duties. [17a] As a bonus note, to my knowledge Games Workshop hasn’t announced this but the battletome has a code for redeeming the book in the Age of Sigmar App when it launches (hopefully in a few weeks) like the 40k books do. Great news for those who want a digital copy close at hand. Angels Aetheric • Anvils of the Heldenhammer • Astral Templars • Azyrite Arbiters • Blades of Dawn • Celestial Vindicators • Hallowed Knights • Hammers of Sigmar • Helden Sons • Lions of Sigmar • Sigmarite Brotherhood • Sons of the Gladius • Stormblood Guard Annihilator • Decimator • Protector • Retributor • Dracothian Guard ( Concussor • Desolator • Fulminator • Tempestor) • Stormdrake Guard

These tomes set quite a precedent going forward. There’s the expected subfactions, artefacts, command traits etc. but also new Grand Strategies, Battle Tactics and Command Abilities. New Grand Strategies and Battle Tactics have debuted in White Dwarf but codifying these into Battletomes implies this is going to be a pattern going forward. New Command Abilities are detached from factions and give further customization for tactics. There’s a lot to look at! Single cast wizards are rarely anything to write home about, and she’s no exception here. Thanks to Blaze of the Heavens , predatory endless spells can’t pass across or finish a move within 3” of this unit, which is neat until you remember some of the more horrific spells (such as Warp Lightning Vortex) aren’t predatory endless spells, and there’s also no restriction on a predatory endless spell being set up within 3” of her. We’re also yet to learn if not moving a spell counts as moving it 0”, which is actually important to understand in both major Games Workshop game systems.
