About this deal

Mandanna crafts a cast of winningly quirky characters, each with their own part to play in Mika's path to belonging... This charming romantic fantasy is a gem.”— Publishers Weekly (STARRED review) I think the author pictured small circle (of people) vibes so well. It was so easy to get attached to all of the characters, main and the side ones. Holiday scenes in the story were like a warm hug from the author and her characters to us readers, that I appreciate the most. And Mika sums up this feeling pretty well, not only with her inner monologue but also in how cautious she is in opening herself to other people and to love. Especially the latter. This is one of my coziest reads of the last year, and I find myself thinking about its enchanted setting all the time.”– Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author So what’s my problem? Many, apparently. Among my lighter quibbles, I’ll say I was generally bored with the story, I didn’t find the prose half as magical as I hoped it would be, and also thought the whole thing was aggressively twee (and listen, I like twee!!!). I felt like there was zero chemistry between the leads. There was no substance to their attraction beyond “you’re hot.” It has a ton of awkward magic info drops that felt like the equivalent of an actor in a film turning to the camera and explaining something everyone else in the scene knows, but is clearly getting stated for the audience. It was very cringy.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is a warm and witchy hug of a book. Full of endearing characters, romance and found family, it's the cozy magical romance you've been waiting for. I absolutely adored it!”—Tasha Suri, author of The Jasmine ThroneAs one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don't mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she's used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos pretending to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously. Special thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.

This gorgeously cozy romantic fantasy sparkles with real magic, love, and joy. A perfect comfort read.”—Stephanie Burgis, author of Scales and Sensibility and SnowspelledConvinced that she’s actually a witch, aged retired actor Ian invites Mika to Nowhere House, where he lives with his husband, Ken, housekeeper Lucie, librarian Jamie, and three precocious young witches named Rosette, Terracotta and Altamira, wards of Lillian Nowhere, herself a witch and the owner of the house. While Lillian is away, he hopes that Mika can teach these young witches how to control their power before a visit from a solicitor in six weeks’ time that will determine whether they can stay at Nowhere House. Despite its warmth and cheer, this isn't only a happy tale; there's also a ton of time spent discussing trauma and how difficult it can make everyday life, much less learning to trust and care for people when you've developed a fear of abandonment or being used. I absolutely adored watching Mika heal from her past and learn to truly live despite her fears.

A magical tale about finding yourself and making a found family that will leave the reader enchanted. United by Pop - Sangu Mandanna On Her Bewitching New Rom-Com, The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches by Kate Oldfield The thing is, being a witch is extraordinary. It might seem sometimes that all we are is odd and different, but the truth is, we’re amazing. We’re part of the earth below us and the sky above us.”The story is written in third person following Mika's POV, but there were also some parts that followed Jamie, the librarian. trigger + content warnings: a lot of discussions about trauma in the past / childhood trauma + abuse in past, mentions of loss of loved ones, mention of online harassment, brief mentions of homophobia + racism + colorism, talk of illness, talk of abusive relationships in past, brief mention of cancer in past, spider mentions.
