This involved dividing space up into a number of consistent horizontal and vertical units, each with consistent spacing between them. Exact directions for using all of the grid systems possible presented are given to the user, showing examples of working correctly on a conceptual level.

If you like to draw with mathematical brain or you simply like things to line up, (graphic designers this really is a good book to have in your arsenal) I would suggest getting a copy. Most people who have worked in web development have been forced into making visual choices somewhere down the line. This book, whilst not a design master piece itself, gives you the tools and knowledge lost in the 80's and 90's. I see things in terms of lines and mathematical equations and this book fit so well into how I draw.Josef Müller Brockmann condensed design elements to focus on a core message with a clean and clear visual aesthetic. I took a 3 year course in Graphic Design way back when and this is the course or knowledge I find that was missing from the curriculum. Given that everybody’s supposed to be learning to code these days, isn’t it time that developers learnt a little bit about design too? At the same time it places in the hands of the educator an aid which he can use to good effect in tuition based on the solution of practical problems. Though irksome to encounter, the misprints can be overlooked as one is engrossed in the significance of the text and illustrations.

The parallels between good architecture and graphic design aside, if you’re working in interface development then it’s important to develop some kind of appreciation of visual design. The book is a must read for students and practitioners alike as it encapsulates an approach to design from which creativity may ensue. The objective here is usability: information presented this way is not only read more quickly and easily, but is also more easily understood and retained in memory. There are a lot of horrible looking interfaces out there produced by development teams who have no idea about basic design aesthetics. The author, a world-renowned professional, thus offers his colleagues the tools to solve problems more easily.

I am a London-based technology architect who has led development across start-ups, digital agencies, software houses and corporates. I am grateful that the publishers keep the book in print, but such a sloppy edition ought never to have made it to print unchecked. In an agency-style environment the focus is on the user experience and the development process is set up to ensure that coders don’t have to make aesthetic decisions. His work is recognized for its simple designs and his clean use of fonts, shapes and colors, which still inspires many graphic designers throughout the world today. One of the most important books in the field since over 40 years provides an unparalleled comprehensive overview with exact directions and instructions, covering all grid systems that are needed.Simplicity and clarity isn’t just for visual designers as developers and architects should also try and achieve clear designs that focus on a set of core messages. This volume provides guidelines and rules for the function and use for grid systems from 8 to 32 grid fields which can be used for the most varied of projects, the three-dimensional grid being treated as well.

Yes, you can read the book cover -to-cover but ideally it's just a great a reference book to get the inspiration, that quick helpful tip, and the do's and don't's of improving your layout skills. It was a bit hard to get used to English being on one page and German on the next, but overtime, that became easier to deal with. It’s not often that practical to organize the separation of concerns between design and development that you would expect to find in a digital agency. Since the 1950s grid systems help the designer to organize the graphic elements and have become a world wide standard.

In the 1920s in Europe, works already arose in the areas of typography, graphic design and photography with objectified conception and rigid composition. The grid is used to define the constant dimensions of the design space and elements are inserted precisely into it. Josef Müller-Brockmann studied architecture, design and history of art in Zurich and worked as a graphic designer and teacher.
