I thought his diaries were being published because they would serve to show the depth of who he was, and instead it was just short journal entries of his day-to-day. But just when you think Rickman might be becoming insufferable, he has a knack of bursting the actorly bubble and saying something profound.

His smarmy cleric Obadiah Slope in the BBC Barchester Chronicles and his vulpine seducer Valmont in the RSC Les Liaisons Dangereuses were early delights, though he was already in his 30s, a late starter.

He takes us inside his home, on trips with friends across the globe, and on the sets of films and plays ranging from Sense and Sensibility, to Noël Coward's Private Lives, to the final film he directed, A Little Chaos. Pat McAfee is 'sick' of criticism aimed at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce after the Chiefs' AFC title victory: 'Why is everybody so mad? He didn’t just mentor Ruby though, he was on RADA’s council for some years, championing the young actors who came through its doors, although he does get fed up with some of the governance issues that get in the way of the acting process.

Someone needs to mention to the narrator that the way to pronounce the letter L as in LA is ‘el’ and not ‘al’. Some names occur with regularity, such as Ian McKellen, Richard Wilson, and Lindsay Duncan, but the person with the most entries in the index is Ruby Wax. However, his roles as the best villain ever, Hans Gruber, in Die Hard (1998), romantic lead in Truly, Madly, Deeply and unforgettable Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (both 1991), all fall outside the scope of these diaries. Madly, Deeply features a photo insert, a foreword by Emma Thompson, and an afterword by Rima Horton. If a script wasn’t up to snuff he would change it, as he admitted doing for his Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
