About this deal

And they usually do roll at least one, and since they get to swing first you might lose that extra die you need (because those Berserkers hit often! If you are the proud owner of both the 878 Vikings base game AND The Age of Vikings expansion, our foam kit is for you.

After a couple of battles, if the English player is not channeling Monty Python’s Holy Grail “Run Away! The rules are very clear and straightforward, the components are fantastic, and I really like the way they used the Movement cards and the Action cards in the design (even though I have concerns about their power).A Wargamers Needful Things is a one stop blog for Wargamers, Military Minifig collectors, Toy Soldier collectors and military history obsessives. Those only serve to enhance the longevity of a game such as this one, allowing us to mix and match to play the unique setting we desire. I really enjoy that both sides are different in style: one favors the aggressor and the other favors a more defensive mindset. When playing with 3 players, simply choose which player will control both factions from one side of the conflict. With the almost constant Viking invasion forces, each turn really does feel like a battering against a meagre force of defenders that somehow seem to keep things on a knife’s edge throughout the entire game.

This game system turned out to be a pleasant delight, and has me very interested in checking out some of the others like 1754 – Conquest: The French and Indian War (which I know she’ll like, because of the Indians). I prefer to use these extra moves to block the paths of the Viking armies and force them to fight extra battles in areas that may not have cities. Only once has it been forcibly triggered, when my only movement card was a Treaty card as the Viking player. However, it always seemed to be quite finely balanced by the end of each round despite the Vikings having a seemingly overwhelming force.

And you might be forgiven for thinking that there would be no way the defending factions (normally one or two defenders in a region), could deal with the invading horde of 17 Norsemen and 8 Berserkers during the first turn.Although the Vikings lose a movement if a battle lasts more than one battle round, I generally care more about killing as many Berserkers as I can. Later that year, the Treaty of Wedmore was agreed whereby the Vikings were able to remain in control of much of northern and eastern England. There are also special event cards that can be played on your opponent's turn, reflecting various historical events such as the conversion of some Vikings to Christianity or the infighting between various English kingdoms.
