There were dozens more monsters of the week that could have been included, there is no evil Angel or Willow Big Bad and some of the loved characters aren't even in it; there is no Oz, Anya, Cordelia, Tara, Dawn or Riley and the game feels like it really could handle them and use them effectively (werewolf mechanics anyone?

Knowledgeable players can fill in this gap, but even Buffy fans could have their memory jogged with reminders of memorable moments from the series. Each villain also has a new ‘Scheme’ which dictates the villains’ victory conditions and throws in some plot twists.

This adds a clue collecting aspect to the game that is reminiscent of Buffy and is a reliable, effective mechanic. However, being a Werewolf lets him move double the roll of his movement dice, and it raises his Fight Dice from 1 to 4. Each monster of the week has a unique thing they do during play to add complications to the game, and as such you’ll want them to be dealt with swiftly.

Willow’s “Resurrect” card is incredibly powerful if playing a team game since it can essentially bring another hero back to life with 3 health. Different locations in the game have different power that you can access, which makes it seem like there’s an extent to which you need to defend and optimise your control of areas to accomplish the tasks. When the game starts there are baddies to kill, a monster of the week to fight with certain items and townies to rescue. Finally, Artifact Cards are cool weapons, or horrible cursed items, that can offer new uses for actions or cause horrible impediments to the players. The game with my wife ended in victory when Giles tossed the necessary tools to Buffy who won the third and final confrontation with the big bad just before the monster swarm devoured enough townies to trigger the hell-mouth.
