About this deal

The Panasonic DMC-GF3 uses a resistive touchscreen to provide mode selections, and as such that there is not a mode dial on the camera. Many features are no longer controlled by dials and buttons and wheels, but via the 3-inch touchscreen (460k- dot) at the rear of the unit. [3] The native 16 PIN (12VHPWR) PCIe connector of GF3 1000W can deliver up to 600W for PCIe 5.0 graphics cards. Digital Interchangeable Lenses | PRODUCTS | LUMIX | Digital Camera | Panasonic Global". The enthusiast-targeted rangefinder aesthetic heralded by the introduction of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 appears for the moment to have given way to a new directive; producing the smallest, lightest G-series camera possible. The move towards smaller, lighter large-sensor cameras with fewer external controls is not limited to Panasonic of course, as both Olympus and Sony are also courting the mass market aggressively. Being a compact system camera, the GF3 uses a contrast detection auto focus (AF) system, which draws information from the imaging sensor rather than a dedicated phase detection unit. Traditionally, contrast detection systems are slower than phase detection devices, but Panasonic has put a lot of work in on this and the GF3 is claimed to focus in just 0.18 sec (approx) with the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm f/4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens mounted.

OLYMPUS - News Release: World's fastest AF*, Flagship of PEN series "OLYMPUS PEN E-P3" ". Olympus-global.com . Retrieved 26 December 2018. It’s worth bearing in mind that lenses belonging to the Micro Four Thirds camp need to have their focal distances multiplied by two to be described in equivalent 35mm terms. Thus the 14mm lens affords the same field of view as a 28mm lens on a traditional 35mm camera, while the 14-42mm offers the 35mm equivalent of 28-84mm. If neither of the kit options takes your fancy then you can always add your own lens from the ever-expanding list of dedicated G-series lenses, which now includes includes zooms, primes and even a dedicated 3D lens. Using an adaptor, it’s also possible to attach regular DSLR lenses from Olympus, Sigma and other third-party manufacturers. The Panasonic GF3 has a new range of Creative Controls, denoted by an artist's palette in the shooting mode menu, with 6 options - Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic Range and Miniature - on offer. As for thumb dial, I prefer the classical front dial, as I have been shooting digital compact for ages. The front dial is more my preferred control style.

Also, GF3 sits in the hand better (I have one, and really enjoy using it; the GF2 was never as comfortable in hand for me when I tried them both in store).

Not as much as you might expect is the short answer, with the GF3’s primary components subtly echoing what has been found in previous Lumix GF models. The GF3 uses a 12.1MP Live MOS sensor and while we’ve been informed that it’s been newly developed for the GF3 it offers exactly the same resolution as the sensors used in both the GF2 and the GF1 before that. The hot-shoe has been removed altogether, with the pop-up flash moving from the shoulder of the camera to the centre, where it now sits directly under the GF3’s ‘hump’. Basic image quality of the GF3 is similar to that of the GF2, with the exception of a slightly improved JPEG rendering at high ISOs. As with the G3, we are pleased to note that one of our long-standing criticisms of the G-series, poor skin tone rendering, has been improved in the GF3. While not perfect, and certainly less effective in indoor mixed lighting scenarios, the GF3's default white balance yields noticeably more realistic flesh tones than the its predecessor, the GF2. In addition, the GF3 offers a portrait 'Photo Style' that helps make shooting in raw mode an option, rather than a necessity, when photographing people. To get the most out of the camera's sensor, however, you're still best served by shooting in raw mode for greater post-exposure control over sharpening and noise reduction. Handling The GF3 also gets the Creative Control shooting mode of the G3, which is essentially a series of six digital effects filters: Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic and Miniaturisation. The Intelligent Resolution mode makes a standard image look like a higher resolution one by processing the contour areas, texture areas and smooth areas individually. There are three available strengths - low, standard and high - and an Extended option which increase the zoom range. Despite all the clever behind-the-scenes processing, it's fairly easy to tell which image was taken with Intelligent Resolution turned on and which one with it turned off due to unwanted artifacts appearing, particularly if viewing onscreen at 100% magnification. While the difference isn't quite so apparent on a print up to A3 in size, I'm not convinced enough to recommend regularly using it.

Increased sensor readout speed means theoretically improved AF speed. Based on our experience with the G3, we'd therefor expect AF speed to rival that of most entry-level DSLRs when presented with static subjects.
