About this deal

A beautiful, tender, rage-filled book about feminist spirituality. This quote comes from one of the latter chapters of the book but it is one that encompasses one of the major themes of this passionate polemic against patriarchy:

Sjöö's art can be found in the Women's Art Collection at Murray Edwards College in Cambridge and at the Museum Anna Nordlander [ sv] in Skellefteå, Sweden. Some of her works are currently held in private collections of individuals: Sig Lonegren, Alice Walker, and Genevieve Vaughan [13] hold a few, while Maggie Parks holds most of her art. [26] The Temple of Goddess Spirituality dedicated to Sekhmet holds Solar Lionheaded Sekhment of Primordial Fire (1992, oil on hardboard) where it is displayed in the living room of their guest house. [27] [28] Written works [ edit ] The Great Cosmic Mother [ edit ] It is not about “men” as a whole, but how a multi thousand year ago experiment in human living, ie societies dominated by male cattle herders, has had it’s assumptions carried through to today. And examining the timeline of the affects of its assumptions. But, when the cult of the male god was established, there must have been difficulty in explaining how he could be the giver of life to all creation—since the man, unlike the woman, cannot produce from his body either the child or the food for the child. The whole attitude of humans towards the God had to be altered—violently altered. There could not be that same vital biological and magical link (the I-Thou) between the child and the father, as there is between the child and its mother: two beings evolving in and from the same body, the same rhythms, the same dreams. From the religious point of view, this means the loss between the human and the divine of direct, continuous physical-emotional-spiritual relationship. Oneness is dualized, the “self” is isolated within, and the rest of the universe, including God, is displaced and objectified without. The evolutionary, protoplasmic connection between the experienced self and the All is broken, and the new relation becomes: I-the Other; or worse: I-It. The father is not of the same all-containing, all-infusing, shaping and nourishing substance, and so the relation between humans and the Father God becomes abstract and alienated, distant and moralistic. Sweden: Karlstad University. Truly, our very sanity is at stake with continuing patriarchy and the denial of the cosmic self—the Goddess—within us all, and within her. An excitingly original book by internationally respected writer and artist Monica Sjöö on the Goddess spirituality of her own native land of Sweden and of Finland and the land of the Saami (formerly Lapland).

The Pomegranate. 15 (1–2): 31–60. ISSN 1743-1735– via EBSCO. My TL;DR: The gist of this book is pretty much the same as the themes and overarching plot of Mad Max Fury RoadAncient moon priestesses were called virgins. ‘Virgin’ meant not married, not belong to a man - a woman who was ‘one-in-herself’. The very word derives from a Latin root meaning strength, force, skill; and was later applied to men: virle. Ishtar, Diana, Astarte, Isis were all all called virgin, which did not refer to sexual chasity, but sexual independence. And all great culture heroes of the past…, mythic or historic, were said to be born of virgin mothers: Marduk, Gilgamesh, Buddha, Osiris, Dionysus, Genghis Khan, Jesus - they were all affirmed as sons of the Great Mother, of the Original One, their worldly power deriving from her. When the Hebrews used the word, and in the original Aramaic, it meant ‘maiden’ or ‘young woman’, with no connotations to sexual chasity. But later Christian translators could not conceive of the ‘Virgin Mary’ as a woman of independent sexuality, needless to say; they distorted the meaning into sexually pure, chaste, never touched. When Joan of Arc, with her witch coven associations, was called La Pucelle - ‘the Maiden,’ ‘the Virgin’ - the word retained some of its original pagan sense of a strong and independent woman. The Moon Goddess was worshipped in orgiastic rites, being the divinity of matriarchal women free to take as many lovers as they choose. Women could ‘surrender’ themselves to the Goddess by making love to a stranger in her temple.”

Retrieved 9 December 2017. Sjöö used imagery in her paintings which often references birth, the female body, and nature. All of these images were central to her beliefs regarding her "Cosmic Mother". She described herself as among the pioneers in this movement of reclaiming female divinity – along with many other writers, artists, poets, and thinkers. In her art, she attempted to "holistically express" her growing religious belief in the Great Mother as the cosmic spirit and generative force in the universe. This was a critical component of her artwork. She claimed to enter a "state" of being or of mind where knowledge was available from past, present, and future. The Great Cosmic Mother" is a groundbreaking book written by Monica Sjoo and Barbara Mor that explores the historical and cultural significance of the sacred feminine throughout human history. Drawing from a wide range of archaeological, mythological, and anthropological sources, the authors present a comprehensive and thought-provoking analysis of the suppressed role of women and the goddess in ancient civilizations. urn:lcp:greatcosmicmothe00sjoo:epub:2db9cde0-3adb-4f2b-80e9-c3bb95327dbd Extramarc University of Alberta Libraries Foldoutcount 0 Identifier greatcosmicmothe00sjoo Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t7cr8gg76 Invoice 11 Isbn 0062507915
