But before that—after proofs of concept in the Mojave Desert—Interstellar Lab needs to figure out how to make its technology light and resilient and reliable enough for the harsh vacuum of space. An integral part of sustainable development is the economic viability of the systems taking part in the innovative urban farm solutions. The BioPod container consists a long-term, scalable solution for vegetable production with an expected lifetime of 20 years. The revenues of the container are sourced by the sales of vegetables while as expenses are considered both the capital and operational costs.

With the newly created BioPods, Interstellar Lab initially aim to better life on Earth through durable farming and the preservation of biodiversity, but with the longer-term ambition to prepare humanity to settle on other planets. Biopod is "an app-controlled microhabitat that automatically regulates temperature, light, humidity, ventilation and rainfall". The team claims it replicates the ideal environment for your plants or animals, so you can grow lots of different plants, or have a little rainforest for your pet pals.
