About this deal

And the woman in folio 76v is not pointing at the man's loins, but moving a piece on the board game that she is playing with him! Along with the Psalms, the book contains luxuriously illuminated pictures of saints and bible stories, and of rural life; farming, cooking, doctoring, spouses squabbling, musicians playing, etceteras. Unlike other illuminated manuscripts, the Luttrell Psalter does not focus only on religious imagery, but instead portrays the domestic dramas of the day. I became very annoyed at this and so compiled my own index of psalter pages that are illustrated in the book, but I should not have had to do this! Tilling the soil and sowing seed grain was only the beginning of growing wheat, rye, and other staples of the medieval diet.

Stilt walkers, acrobats, human-animal hybrids… This is not a fantasy novel: it is a world-famous Late Medieval manuscript made in Lincolnshire, England.

It is ninety-six pages long, but well produced and presented, as one would expect when the publisher is the British Library. Brown's writing is generally clear and readily understandable, though lacking perhaps in joie de vivre. Even the interpretations made by the author about the depictions in the psalter I felt often were based on mere conjecture. a) The seller shall be entitled to place a reserve on any lot and the Auctioneer shall have the right to bid on behalf of the seller for any lot on which a reserve has been placed. The Luttrell Psalter, Folio Society, 2006, facsimile edition, reproduced from British Library Additional MS 42130, all edges gilt, later real vellum endleaves, later full natural calf by Chris Arnison (rebound 2016), blindstamped and embossed decoration to both boards in differing designs, clasps, folio, together with commentary volume by Michelle P. c) If such arrangements are not made within seven days of the notification the Auctioneer is empowered to sell the lot without reserve by auction or by private treaty and to receive from the seller the normal selling commission and special expenses. Creative, imaginative and even bizarre miniatures embellish the manuscript with bright colors, gold and silver.

For example, in the banqueting scene at the foot of folio 208r, Brown says four of those present "stare frontally at the viewer", when in fact on two do so; the other two whose faces are turned frontally, actually look to their sides instead. a) Unless otherwise instructed in writing, all goods on the Auctioneer's premises and in his custody will be held insured against the risk of fire, burglary, water damage and accidental breakage or damage.
