About this deal

V for Vendetta: Behind the Mask explores the visual history of the mask, from its origins in a British comic series, to its modern popularity at protest movements. She adds: “A big part of the story is of smoke and mirrors and things not being as they seem and a lot of that is communicated through the mask.” The exhibition also draws attention to V’s motives and extremist actions, a strain that is still relevant to modern day movements. “That tension is really interesting,” Stirling-Middleton says. “Where’s the line between what’s too far and what’s peaceful? That can be quite personal.” In October 2019 protesters in Hong Kong started using the mask in opposition to the government's banning the use of masks during protests. [41]

They slightly adapted the look of it to make it feel more sinister,” she adds, pointing to the smile across the mask’s lips and eyes. Lloyd and Moore also spent a lot of time creating a “dark, film noir” tone for the series in the 80s, according to Stirling-Middleton. When the publishers cancelled Warrior in 1985 (with two completed issues unpublished due to the cancellation), several companies attempted to convince Moore and Lloyd to let them publish and complete the story. In 1988, DC Comics published a ten-issue series that reprinted the Warrior stories in colour, then continued the series to completion. The first new material appeared in issue No. 7, which included the unpublished episodes that would have appeared in Warrior No. 27 and No. 28. Tony Weare drew one chapter ("Vincent") and contributed additional art to two others ("Valerie" and "The Vacation"); Steve Whitaker and Siobhan Dodds worked as colourists on the entire series. Part of the mask’s endurance may lie in its ambiguous characteristics, according to Stirling-Middleton. “The way Lloyd has managed to make it so sinister even though it’s a pleasant-looking face immediately conveys meaning beyond words,” the curator says. The Guy Fawkes mask has now become a common brand and a convenient placard to use in protest against tyranny–and I'm happy with people using it, it seems quite unique, an icon of popular culture being used this way. My feeling is the Anonymous group needed an all-purpose image to hide their identity and also symbolise that they stand for individualism–V for Vendetta is a story about one person against the system. We knew that V was going to be an escapee from a concentration camp where he had been subjected to medical experiments but then I had the idea that in his craziness he would decide to adopt the persona and mission of Guy Fawkes–our great historical revolutionary. These masks were traditionally worn by people as a tribute to Fawkes – an “iconic and anarchic figure in British history”, says exhibition curator Emma Stirling-Middleton. Lloyd depicted the mask with a wide moustache upturned at either end, with a thin beard and red cheeks.

The other group, led by libertarian Todd Seavey, counter-protested against the anarchists, wearing masks purportedly supplied by a Time Warner employee.
