Mia Louise Austin inspired thousands of people after suffering a stroke which left her unable to move or speak. Mrs Austin had told the inquest her daughter had gradually learned how to eat soft food after the stroke, but had also experienced choking incidents before. A week after opening her eyes, Mia was diagnosed with ‘Locked-in Syndrome’, a condition where Mia has been left her trapped in her own body, unable to speak. But Mia, of Wirral, Merseyside, had suffered from previous choking incidents and her family given specialist medical equipment to try and avoid it.
