There is a size at which dignity begins," he exclaimed; "further on there is a size at which grandeur begins; further on there is a size at which solemnity begins; further on, a size at which awfulness begins; further on, a size at which ghastliness begins. That size faintly approaches the size of the stellar universe. So am I not right in saying that those minds who exert their imaginative powers to bury themselves in the depths of that universe merely strain their faculties to gain a new horror?” XXVII. Next day the Bishop accuses Swithin of having a woman in his room, and produces a bracelet as evidence. Swithin assures him he has done nothing wrong. Murphy, Patricia. In Science's Shadow. Literary Constructions of Late Victorian Women. Columbia, MI, and London: University of Missouri Press, 2006. stars rounded up because of hardy's incomparable prose - it would've been a full four stars if not for the odd ending.

In Two on a Tower, Hardy explores two quite divergent themes: the romantic theme of the 'star-crossed lovers', whose relationship is thwarted by outside forces, and the discrepancy between the impassionate scientific outlook and the emotional and ethical human concerns of individual human beings. Within the first theme, Hardy presents a complex love story which involves failed marriage, emotional cruelty, adultery, accidental bigamy and, above all, tragedy caused by malevolent fate. The second theme is less explicit and was overlooked by both contemporary readers and reviewers. It concerns the potential and limitations of scientific inquiry, which prompted Hardy to delve into philosophical and ethical issues related to man's predicament. Unfortunately, both themes are not developed sufficiently in the novel. The love story looks like a Victorian remake of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with emphasis on class division, age difference, unwanted pregnancy, and love not fully reciprocated. The second theme, which presents a typical Victorian gendered and masculinist view of science, is also disappointing as a literary venture.

hardy's usual social commentary is here - this novel contains an excellent exploration of class in victorian society, which is something i always enjoy reading about. swithin's scientific endeavours of course play a major part in the story and are also interesting, it's something i've never read about before. typical for hardy, the role of fate in one's destiny is also heavily discussed. The sudden arrival of unexpected news is also a favourite device of the sensation novel. On the very day that Swithin is setting off to secretly marry Viviette he receives an inheritance, but only on the condition that he remain single. On virtually the same day Viviette also receives a letter from her brother Louis Granville (who has not been mentioned in the novel up to that point) announcing his arrival to thwart her romance. Almost all the events of the novel take place in an unspecified location in the south-west of England. But apart from mention of Bath, Southampton, and Melchester (Salisbury) there is very little attempt on Hardy’s part to integrate his narrative with the world of ‘Wessex’ that is built up so powerfully in his other novels.

The relationship between the protagonist Swithin and Lady Viviette Constantine is presented as ‘peculiar’ because of the age difference and the apparent disparity in their status. Yet she is only eight years older than him; she has married into her position of Lady Constantine; and he is the son of a clergyman. They are not so far apart socially. Most nineteenth-century scientists were men, but there were important women as well, such as the fossilist Mary Anning (1799-1847), who was honored — and received financial support from — both the British Association for the Advancement of Science and the Geological Society of London. With irony worthy of one of his novels Hardy’s sexist myopia is underlined by the fact that one of the foremost astronomers in the nineteenth century was a woman with an international reputation — Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society who received a royal pension to honor her work in that field and who was a member of the Royal Irish Academy and winner of the Prussian Gold Medal for Science.

The new knowledge inflames his passion, but when they meet she feels guilty at distracting him from his astronomy They think their relationship cannot succeed, and must be concealed from the general public. In ceea ce priveste actiunea, o avem in prim plan pe Lady Constantine, o tanara domnita care plimbandu-se cu trasura devine intrigata de singuraticul turn care se afla pe domeniul sotului ei. age?’ she asked, with almost maternal solicitude.‘I think astronomy is a bad study for you. It makesXXXVII. Swithin sets off for the southern hemisphere, and his lodgings at the Tower are dismantled. Viviette has a vision of a golden-haired child, and decides she must follow Swithin. be known,’ said Swithin, with some disappointment.‘I thought that these circumstances would make the reason Hardy had a largely unhappy marriage, but following the death of his first wife Emma, he married the much younger woman Florence Dugdale – who was forty years his junior. Unfortunately for him this marriage also turned out to be unsatisfactory, and Hardy spent the next sixteen years expressing his remorse in poems dedicated to his first wife.
