Roboute Guilliman — Primarch of the XIII Legion ' Ultramarines', Lord of the Five Hundred Worlds, now know as 'the Avenging Son

It could be nothing more sinister than shelter from the warp,' replied Euten. 'You'll find out. The Lion is coming. I suggest you put on full plate and welcome him in a menner that befits his eminence. Any loyal son you said. Well one has come to you out of the storm" I mean, there was so much opportunity for so much more in the novel when it comes to the various Legions, and I think the novel really wouldn't have been any different had most of them not been involved at all. Other than it really made it seem like MaCragge's beacon did make the difference and save lives. Unfinished or abandoned character Arch's, a stupidly overpowered antagonist and terrible character portrayal literally had me pausing and thinking wtf did I just hear? I think the commission should start by looking at what Prof Barrett tried to insist on more than a decade ago. I’m calling for it to establish a formal group. As well as officials from the CWGC, this should include the defence secretary and representatives from the British armed forces and from Kenya, Tanzania and other former colonies. This was not about empire-building, or seeking to claim the throne for himself as Horus had done. The Avenging Son already had a stellar empire in his possession -- Ultramar -- the Five Hundred Worlds. Guilliman wanted his brother to know that his only intention was to ensure the survival of their father's dream. Terra might have fallen, and their father might already be dead.I The Solar War • II The Lost and the Damned • III The First Wall • Sons of the Selenar • IV Saturnine • Fury of Magnus • V Mortis • VI Warhawk • VII Echoes of Eternity • Garro: Knight of Grey • VIII The End and the Death ( Volume I • Volume II • Volume III) John Grammaticus shows up yet again, with a comrade in arms, which makes a nice to change to meet another perpetual cabal agaent. This was an excellent addition to my collection of 40K novels giving us the "history" of the Horus Heresy. Not wanting to fall into the same trap of self-aggrandizement as Horus, Guilliman refused to crown himself Emperor. He proposed to Lion El'Jonson that he rule Imperium Secundus. However ultimately, the duty would fall to a reluctant Sanguinius, Primarch of the Blood Angels, who was named Imperator Regis. Guilliman became Lord Warden while Lion El'Jonson was named Lord Protector of Imperium Secundus, a title similar to Warmaster. [2] A major test for Imperium Secundus came during the Battle of Sotha, where Imperial forces attempted to defend the Pharos. Fortunately for Guilliman, his forces were victorious. [3] After the battle, Guilliman and Lion El'Jonson came to severe disagreement over what to do about Night Lords Primarch Konrad Curze, who was still loose upon the planet. Curze may have been behind a string of suicide bombings and rebellions that targeted Guilliman's authority on Macragge, resulting in Lion El'Jonson using the Dark Angels to put Macragge under martial law and deploying the Dreadwing to devastate rebellious areas of the planet. However Curze was ultimately captured by The Lion in the Illyrium region and forced to stand trial. [4]

After the battle, Guilliman and Lion El'Jonson almost came to blows over what to do about Konrad Curze, the Primarch of the Night Lords Traitor Legion, who was still loose on Sotha. Curze was believed to have been responsible for organising a series of suicide bombings and rebellions that targeted Guilliman's authority on Macragge, which resulted in Lion El'Jonson in his role as Lord Protector using the Dark Angels to put Macragge under martial law and deploying the Dreadwing, one of the Dark Angels' six specialised Hexagrammaton formations or "Wings," which made use of weapons of mass destruction like Phosphex and Vortex Weapons, to devastate the rebellious areas of the planet. Curze was ultimately captured by The Lion in the Illyrium region and forced to stand trial. The more Horus Heresy books I read by Dan Abnett the less I love his work during the series. Perpetuals and the Cabal are two of the most uninteresting components of the 40k universe. On paper I love them both and think they're full of potential but every time they're in a story I just could not give less of a shit. I really enjoyed all of the This is a story that forces us in Britain to rethink our deeply held traditions that come to the front of our minds this week and still have the power to affect our national mood, including the capacity to soothe, even momentarily, the chaos and fractures of Brexit Britain. We can’t say that we remember all our war dead with honour and dignity and yet exclude a third of a million people who died in their own continent serving Britain. Next week, as I lay my wreath in Tottenham, I will be remembering them all. But this is not the result of Kimani neglecting his duties but of a political decision taken thousands of miles away at the highest levels of the British establishment. I had to accept that one of the British institutions I always admired, the CWGC, was hiding a scandal. Heresy comes in many forms. It can be blatant, like the one which now tears down the stars, but it can be subtle too, accidental. To make example, the building of a new Imperium when the old one is not yet pronounced dead. -- I am not building my own Imperium, Gantulga. I am preserving what's left of the original."

I had this gut feeling that it was either going to be the best 40k novel or just fall completely flat due to the overambitious nature of the endeavor. From my point of view, it is the latter and is such a disappointment. Imperium Secundus was a Human empire on the Eastern Fringe of the Galaxy formed in 009. M31 during the Horus Heresy. At its peak, it compromised roughly five hundred worlds and was centered around the realm of Ultramar. [1] History By 014.M31, the final year of the Horus Heresy, it had become clear to the Loyalists on the other side of the Ruinstorm that both the Emperor and His Imperium had survived the Horus Heresy intact. The Imperium Secundus' ruling Triumvirate then decided to abandon the project, which was now both unnecessary and seen as somewhat heretical and disloyal. The Imperium Secundus' territories were restored to their prior Imperial sectors or to the Realm of Ultramar under the Regency of Valentus Dolor. The Lion dwelled in secrets, and played his cards too close, for he walked by himself when he pleased. There was too much of the wild forest in him. The Lion should have been as noble as any of Guilliman's brother Primarchs, but they had never been close, and there was too much about him that was sly. Yet, despite his personal misgivings, Guilliman welcomed the Lion with the formality and respect due his prestigious position.

Vulkan’s arrival on Macragge brought hope, but he had been driven insane by torture at the hands of his brother Konrad Curze. The arrival of Sanguinius was the last piece of the puzzle, and he was anointed Emperor of Imperium Secundus, with the Lion as Lord Protector and Guilliman as Lord Warden. This triumvirate would rule in the best interests of all, supported by elements from all nine of the loyal Space Marine Legions, who had been brought together by the new beacon that lit the warp.

Which leads me to my second point, his mother figure/advisor. This is supposed to be a powerful woman, a direct consultant to the primarch of 500 world's, and a prominent figurehead despite her age she was made to look like some pathetic whinging crone? a terrified helpless old woman. wtf?! There are so many strong older women personalities she could have played, if you wanted to keep her useless and feeble at least make her stoic and fearless in the face of death. This needs to be put right, with archives scoured for names. Also the CWGC needs to start telling the story of why so many of those who served Britain are not named and not remembered as individuals. The problem is they're all mixed together along with at least a half dozen other elements, and the warping of characters to keep the story moving. Narek, a limited but motivating force, loses the motivating part. Vulkan is so different from the immediately prior Vulkan Lives that I refuse to believe Abnett had a chance to read it. Curze, a consistently psychopathic serial killer, is still somehow so tonally different here that it's jarring.

The problem is where this series is at as a whole. Dan Abnett himself references this in his note at the end, this book is trying to weave together characters and situations from at least a dozen previous novels in this series. There are a number of elements that could have had a good story built around them. The aging Euten the chamberlain, giving her advice to a Primarch and the Adeptus Astartes as though she is their equal. The concept of Perpetuals. The dialogue between the Lion and Guilliman. Pollux finding his purpose. The Raven Guard, Salamanders, Iron Hands, Blood Angels, and Imperial Fists(with the exception of Alexis) did virtually NOTHING. I mean, even the White Scars only had that one scene of introduction that everyone else had, and they helped chase Curze a little bit, but other than that, they did.... nothing? After the Battle of Miral, Dantioch's mask, now know as "the mask of the Warden of the Pharos", was left upon the funeral pyre of Chapter Master Mansirius Thorcyra. With Sotha wiped of life by the Tyranids, a "Warden of the Pharos" was considered no longer needed. [7b]In Dar Es Salaam, what was a large carrier corps cemetery is now a dusty wasteland with no markings. How that was allowed to happen is suggested in War Graves Commission meeting minutes from shortly after the war, found by Barrett, which states that the governor for the area “considered that the vast carrier corps cemeteries at Dar Es Salaam and elsewhere should be allowed to revert to nature as speedily as possible”.
