About this deal

The degree of granularity in the timer and the time required to set a high temperature could stand improvement.

Judging performance, there was a slight variation in our static tests, but in fractions of degrees between each probe and the control temperature. The base unit has individual alarms for each probe, so the user can differentiate between them. The base unit alarms have four volume settings, ranging from 80 to 90 decibels, while the remote has one set at 70 decibels, all loud enough to hear at a distance of 50 feet. The MEATER is unique in that it is a genuinely wireless thermometer. The probes connect via Bluetooth to the base unit, which then connects to the app, and you can extend the range by connecting the entire assembly to WiFi. In testing, we found the probes pretty accurate, either dead-on or within two degrees in our static tests, but it registered three degrees short on the boiling water test, which was approaching the upper limit of the probe’s range. The probes have two sensors each, one end to insert in food and the other to monitor the ambient temperature, so there is no need to dedicate a probe to monitoring the grill. It's important to note that some induction cooktops can create temporary interference with digital thermometers, which can cause an inaccurate reading. The interference will not cause any damage to the thermometer or cooktop, but your temperature reading will be inaccurate. To take an accurate reading with a digital thermometer, simply turn the cooktop off briefly. The unit has a few useful features, like a count-up/count-down timer and a target temperature setting with low and high-temperature alarms. The alarm that indicates you’ve reached the target temperature or the end of your timer is reasonably clear and loud, ranging between 72 and 88 decibels. For reference, sirens on emergency vehicles operate at 110 to 120 decibels, so there’s a small chance of not noticing your alarm. In our tests, it was audible at a 50-foot distance, with some diminishment at 75 feet. The ThermoWorks Smoke Remote BBQ Alarm Thermometer took the prize for its accuracy, features, and connectivity, all at a reasonable price point.

The Weber Connect’s probes could be sharper to make piercing meat easier, and for the price of this model, the app is shy on features and intuitive design.

Accessories for your barbecue type:

The smaller control buttons present a very slight learning curve, and the difference between the alarm sounds is moot at a distance.

There was a little more temperature variation than others, and we’d like to see its Bluetooth connectivity improved during indoor use. Bringle urges people to understand their cooking environment and buy with that in mind. If you’re cooking at home, have little interference, or don’t plan on leaving the grill’s side, signal strength and wireless range aren’t as much of a consideration. If, however, you need to move around your home and do other things while your food spends hours on the grill, you’ll need something with a better range. The TempSpike is another completely wireless thermometer system, with the probes connected to a base unit that connects to an app via Bluetooth or WiFi. The app is intuitive and easy to navigate, with a large display that feeds you the current, target, and ambient temperatures. It also has graphing capabilities to show your heat profile over the length of the cook. It has good alarm delivery, with clear sound at 84 decibels, vibration, and push notifications. The Connect performed well in our tests. Yet, the probes could be sharper, and the app could be more intuitive and feature-rich considering the price.

We then tested the thermometers against cooked pieces of meat. Leave-in models recorded the temperature over time, while we tested instant-read models after a prescribed time. Finally, we assessed each thermometer's value based on performance and price. After scoring each category from one to five, we weighted the scores with accuracy counting for 50 percent and arrived at our final rating. Temperature accuracy and range:Look for thermometers that are advertised with accuracy within ±2˚F, which is a range of accuracy most good thermometers can promise. This will help you ensure food safety as well as preferred doneness. Temperature range: Factor in what you cook most often and then find the range of temperatures the thermometer can report — and withstand — that works best for you. Thermometers with a wide temperature range are useful for larger foods with longer cook times. But a narrower range might deliver better accuracy or a faster response time. Read the use and care instructions to determine the uppermost temps the thermometer can withstand to ensure the device can handle direct cooking as well as flare-ups.During my tenure in restaurant kitchens, I spent countless tedious, sleepless hours watching over smoking, grilling, or slow-roasting projects. As a civilian, I now bemoan even the thought of monitoring a temperature for hours. Thankfully, wireless meat thermometers offer some freedom from the tyranny of these cookers, allowing you to walk away, take on other tasks, or maybe nap during an all-night cook. Most of the thermometers we reviewed here have an accuracy of +/-1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celcius) at average cooking temperatures, which is an acceptable level of variation. These start to skew to more significant variation at extreme temperatures, but these are outside the normal range of cooking. Five degrees isn’t a giant swing when deep frying, but it presents a more significant issue when cooking steaks or burgers. So, do look for the highest degree of accuracy you can find. Monitoring your ambient temperature and food temperature is critical for long cooking. When using coals or charcoal for your cooking, temperature drops and spikes are common, and having an alert set to tell you if the grill is outside your temperature range can save dinner from low temperatures or sudden fires. Likewise, monitoring the temperature of your food and any spikes or drops will be vital in getting a reliable finished product.
