Are they a woman? Do they wear glasses? Is their hair brown? Flipping down the character pictures on the board that don’t match the description narrows down the answer. The first player to correctly guess the other’s character wins the game, but guess wrong and you lose! To play the board game Hedbanz, players each wear a headband and slide a card in the slot on the front. This allows the other players to see the card while also ensuring the person wearing the card can NOT see it.

Now, let’s get started! Put on your headband, choose a card, and put it in the holder on your headband … but don’t peek! The other players can see what your card says, but for now, it’s a mystery to you! Almost every kid has pretended that the floor is lava at some point. Now, the kids can play without climbing and jumping all over your furniture! Instead, this game uses foam tiles to act as safe surfaces to stand on. Both games also use timers.Any kind of timer will work – a kitchen timer, a timer from another game, a timer app on your phone. To play without a timer, limit the number of questions each player can ask other players. If they cannot guess the card within that number of questions, their turn ends. For example, for a lesson on Tithing and Fast Offerings, I wrote down the following 4 words and phrases on separate index cards.

Main Objective: Be the player or the team to correctly identify the most answers written on their ‘Hedbanz ’ and get rid of their game chips first. When the timer runs out, the second player takes his or her turn following the same guidelines above. At the end of the second player’s turn, each player counts the number of cards in the pile on their left. The player with the most cards wins. You may need to help younger players place the card into the slot on their headband, especially if they are tempted to peek at the card.

At any time that you think you know what the card is, you may ask “Am I ….?” and if the answer is no, you may continue asking questions.If you guess the picture before the timer runs out, take another card and put it on your headband (remember not to peek). Continue asking questions until the timer runs out. For each picture you guess correctly, put one of your chips in the bank. Then it becomes the next player's turn. Other games recommended for family fun include the Water Balloon Toss Game and 5 Second Rule (see 5 Second Rule rules). Complexity: It never hurts to challenge a child, but when it’s something that’s supposed to be fun, you don’t want the difficulty level to spoil the game. Depending on your child’s age and development, you may want to choose a game that doesn’t have too many rules, or where the rules are easy to follow. It’s also worth considering whether they will do better with fast-paced games or slow, methodical games. To achieve this in your homemade game, you just need a way to hold the clue cards on each player’s forehead. Since we have four females in our home, we had a ready supply of elastic headbands on hand so that’s what we use. Now flip over the timer. You get to go first! A great way to start is to try to figure out which category your card falls into. Try starting with a question like Am I an animal?

Competitive level: Some games are more competitive than others and there’s nothing wrong with nurturing a competitive spirit – games can help children learn to win or lose with grace and respect. Alternatively, you can encourage a child’s ability to work with others by choosing cooperation games instead.Hedbanz is available in a game set which includes everything that you’ll need to begin playing immediately. If you have a hedbanz game at home (like the one pictured on the left), use the blue headbands by slipping an index card into the front of each headband. If you do not have this game, no worries! You can also have the person just hold the card up to their forehead without looking at it. Physical space: Some games can get a little rowdy and require room to play. Consider the amount of space you have available and whether furniture, or other items, will need to be moved before playing. A game that requires you to shift heavy objects first is less likely to get played as much in the home. Classic games or modern games?
