About this deal

The decimal Halfpenny measured just 17.14mm, weighed only 1.78g and was only ever minted in bronze. It was the smallest ever UK coin. As a result, it was never very popular and was withdrawn in 1984. Most 1964 pennies are worth only their face value. And even coins in uncirculated condition are likely to be worth only a few dollars.

The coin immediately proved to be widely popular; a fact that was largely compounded by coin’s silver composition. Hoarding of 1964 Kennedy halves was immense. For that reason, the coin failed to circulate well. In fact, many numismatists believe that the early hoarding of Kennedy half dollars is one main reason the denomination doesn’t circulate today. Look at the obverse (or “heads” side) of a 1964 penny, and the chances are it will look very familiar. It carries the same image of President Lincoln that’s been appearing on cents for over 100 years. Above Lincoln’s portrait are inscribed the words “In God We Trust”. “Liberty” is inscribed to its left, while the date is on the right. The 1964 penny has the image of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC on its reverse. If you look closely, you can see the statue of Lincoln in the middle of the portico. That makes this one of the few coins to have an image of the same person on both sides. Because the planchet is too small, the design disappears over the edges. Somehow, the coin wasn’t identified by the Mint’s quality assurance processes and found its way into the world. These featured the conjoined images of William and Mary on the obverse, and an image of Britannia seated on the reverse.

The main factor to consider is the quality, as in any other coin, as we will see later, but now let’s talk about the patina.Pennies have been part of history in Great Britain since Anglo-Saxon times. It is thought the first Halfpenny coins were minted for Henry I, who reigned from 1100 – 1135. These are extremely rare and could possibly have been only test coins, which may not have entered circulation. As the name would suggest the value was half of a penny. Satin finish: The surface of a 1964 SMS penny will have a matte-like finish, with less shine than a regular penny. This is due to a special sandblasting process used during production. The largest text is reserved for the denomination. This is written in full as “ONE CENT” and curves along the lower coin edge.

Coin grading agencies take the color of copper coins into account when assessing and valuing them. Coins that are at least 95 per cent red across both faces are graded “red”. You may see the abbreviation “RD” in coin listings. At most grades, values are similar to the Philadelphia pennies. And again, unless your coin has an interesting error, it’s unlikely to be worth much if it isn’t red. In 1959 U.S Mint decided the 1c coins change its familiar Wheat Reverse to a design commemorating the Lincoln Memorial (more about 1959 Lincoln Cent). To preserve the actual patina of our coins, it is important to keep them in a stable and controlled place. That is why certified capsules are a wonderful option both for this and for knowing the grade as we will see below.
