About this deal

Few have better memories of the man and his famous horse than Gilman's daughter-in-law Libby Gilman, who married Frank's son Egerton. After four uninspiring efforts – the best of which was a third place at Garthorpe under Peter Greenall, now Lord Daresbury – Gilman offered the ride to Dick Saunders' daughter Caroline. who delivered a long, but fruitless chase up the home straight before giving best to the hunter by 15 lengths.

The dominant force in the division throughout the 2014-2015 campaign, he had a slow start to the season when suffering defeats at the hands of Gordon Elliott’s Oscar Barton at Down Royal over Christmas and Willie Mullins’ Prince De Beauchene in the Raymond Smith Memorial at Leopardstown. Saunders' role in the success will never be underestimated, and after he retired the horse failed to win in another two seasons of racing despite assistance from some of the best professional jockeys, yet Grittar's life revolved around his owner/breeder/trainer Frank Gilman, a man of many parts but with his heart in Britain's smallest county, Rutland. A hardback volume in Acceptable condition, boards and spine rather grubby, interior clean and bright.

Gilman, who died at the age of 78, 11 years after Grittar's great Aintree triumph, remains the most recent permit holder to win the National. A fine second under 12st 4lb at Nottingham when ridden by John Francome saw him start favourite for the 1983 National in which he was joint-top weight with 11st 12lb, and, ridden by Paul Barton, ran a sound race to finish fifth behind Corbiere. A hunter usually goes out and shoots animals, while a trapper sets traps, then comes back later to see if any animals got caught in them. The major change within the spring, saw the race that was formerly known as the Raymond Smith Memorial Hunter Chase, moving to it’s third different course within three years, following a request from trainers for the race to be run left handed.

It also proved to be one of the final acts in the season, because the Covid-19 pandemic brought all racing to a stop in March, with the sport suspended all the way through to early June ensuring that year's Punchestown Festival was cancelled. It was typical of the 55-year-old Thorne's sporting spirit and attitude to life that he would take the ride on a homebred in a maiden point-to-point. We eventually got a meal at a restaurant we used regularly at Husbands Bosworth, and they stayed open late for us.In simple terms, if Spartan Missile faced Hazel Hill in a handicap hunters' chase he would be asked to carry 18lb more, a significant weight concession to a horse we know is very good. Libby says: "I think the idea was to put Caroline on to sweeten him up," and the resulting second place behind classy ladies' open horse Clonmellon was a clear improvement. Chaser, on the other hand, connotes a sense of pursuit or following but doesn't necessarily imply the act of catching or killing. Born in the midst of the Great Depression, the theme of the 1939 World’s Fair was “The World of Tomorrow” - a theme that captured the hearts of a generation. I was commissioned to portray ‘Niloufer’ – a small, wiry and very sharp hunter-chaser mare just before her retirement.

The sound instruction and information given in this book make it a particularly valuable one for the amateur owner and would-be trainer, for whom primarily it is designed. That win actually put me ahead for the week and was one of my most meroable festival moments to date.
