At University, I turned to Jilly Cooper for respite during exams and Mary Wesley’s books introduced me to characters whose shoes I wanted to step in to. Vivid descriptions of the area, a strong sense of place, excerpts from the birth mother’s journal, crossing paths with Dougie, and a side of romance turned this into a page-turner.Sometimes it is as mundane as sitting there thinking ‘come on, come on, come on, get ON with it’, and just putting one word after another after another until you crank up momentum and before you know it four hours are up and you've got kids to pick up from school. Scott and Frankie go on to take a few risks, make several sacrifices, and discover new truths related to each other’s family and love as their relationship progresses. I loved the difficulties Nell and Dougie face, the way the lives of the characters have such rich histories and how two very different worlds collide in the early 70s and then almost 40 years later. Whenever she gets some time off from her writing schedules, Freya likes to indulge in doing ceramics, baking, and tinkering around her small farm. As I read on and got to know the characters better, I got used to the time jumps and in the end didn't mind it.
