About this deal

House of Cards is an efficient, well paced thriller, with a balanced blend of fun, and sordidness, and an interesting set of characters. I recalled watching the original BBC programme of this, with the wonderfully cast Ian Richardson as the schemingly ambitious Francis Urquhart, and have had the original book on my TBR list forever. Having finally got around to reading it, I am pleased that I enjoyed it. If you enjoy a book where our heroine constantly makes stupid decisions and leaves you shaking your head constantly, then this is the book for you. The book starts with Jonnie ready to propose even though they’ve never really dated and had slept together months earlier. Maggie’s life is in Minneapolis, but he went to Vegas and built a casino for her. Before he can propose though, she announces she is marrying her gay best friend to fulfill her father’s will and keep the family company going. PDF / EPUB File Name: The_House_of_Cards_Complete_Trilogy_-_Michael_Dobbs.pdf, The_House_of_Cards_Complete_Trilogy_-_Michael_Dobbs.epub This opening book of the trilogy lays the groundwork for what looks to be a sensational British political series, centred on one Member of Parliament and his addiction to power, no matter the cost. The book opens after the latest general election, as cabinet posts are being mulled over, and certain people, sure to be getting something are left out in the dark. Cue the beginning of the end for those holding the reins of power. Any reader of this genre may see some of the Jeffrey Archer influences in the book, especially in FIRST AMONG EQUALS, though in this case it is one man seeking power, not a handful. The reader will also see the lengths to which a report will go to obtain the scoop of her lifetime and how she will handle the world of man-dominated reporters. In what can only be described as a true ascent to power of both characters, Dobbs sets the scene for some explosive action in the books that follow and will surely have readers on the edge of their seats.

The characters in this book were part of the reason why I felt that the character-driven plot didn't work. All of the characters in this book seemed incredibly unlikable and difficult to relate to. Even the characters that it seemed like the reader was supposed to like, weren't easy to like and were much easier to dislike. I found all the characters acted in an extremely superficial and fake manner, making them difficult to enjoy and believe in. It certainly conditioned my view about my own political future, and how to protect my family while I was doing it. It was certainly a major step on the way to being who or what I am today.” Jonathan Best is nervous at the prospect of meeting Maggie Reinhardt again. She's his one true love since their teenage years, someone he looks forward to proposing as soon as she arrives from Minneapolis.

In the US adaptation, the phrase is used by Frank Underwood in the first episode during his initial meeting with Zoe Barnes, the US counterpart of Mattie Storin. From 1991 to 1998, Dobbs was a columnist for The Mail on Sunday newspaper. From 1998 to 2001, he hosted the current affairs programme Despatch Box on BBC Two. The drama introduced and popularised [4] the phrase: "You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment". It was a non-confirmation confirmative statement, used by Urquhart whenever he could not be seen to agree with a leading statement, with the emphasis on either the "I" or the "possibly", depending on the situation. The phrase was even used in the House of Commons, House of Lords and Parliamentary Committees following the series. [13] [14] [15] Prince Charles himself said the phrase in response to a provocative question from a journalist in 2014. [16] Michael John Dobbs, Baron Dobbs (born 14 November 1948) is a British Conservative politician and author, best known for his House of Cards trilogy.

After the initial TV series the author revised the published novel to bring it in line with the UK TV series, in which Urquhart throws Mattie from the roof rather than committing suicide, thus allowing for a continuation of the story. The name of the newspaper that Mattie Storin works for was changed from The Daily Telegraph to the fictional The Chronicle, same as the TV series. E anche quando mette in moto le macchinazioni che porteranno alla sua caduta, lo fa per vendicarsi di quell’umiliazione. Stupendosi di esserci riuscito.

Yet Dobbs has had his fair share of real-life political drama. As if working for Thatcher during the height of her premiership, and being in Downing Street with John Major at the very end wasn’t enough, Dobbs was present when the IRA bombed the Grand Hotel in Brighton during the 1984 Conservative party conference. Jonathan is thirty-three, the same age as Maggie's older brother. Apart from running the casino he built, Jonathan has some other talents as well which he is seeking to capitalize now. But he still wants his love with him, though Maggie doesn't seem interested in making any efforts at first. While it did seem a bit long-winded at times, I still enjoyed the descriptions and the problems that one encounters on a day-to-day working of a resort and casino. The story is amazing. The characters are lovely, you want to know more about them. It's like you’re feeling the stress along with them. And that ending...my God, I can’t wait to know more of what is going to happen with that huge hook at the end… Il Presidente Americano è appena stato eletto, è saldissimo al potere e serviranno due stagioni a un Frank Underwood deciso e privo di morale a spodestarlo. All the time his victims will run to Francis for help little knowing that he’s the cause of all their woes.
