About this deal

His food can be explored not just at The Fat Duck but also at the 2-star Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, the 1-star Hind's Head, the Perfectionist's Cafe at Heathrow, and the Resonance bar in Dubai and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal Dubai. This is not the first book that talks about sous-vide or dry ice, but it is one of the first books that make these nerdy things suitable for home cooks. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. All our products are intended for use in a commercial environment and are of a quality level demanded by professionals and serious cooks. This was one of Blumenthal’s revamped recipes, and unlike the other two recipes I tried, to me it lacked any wow factor.

Of course modern European sweetish milk chocolate is the first thing we tend to think of when we read “chocolate” so “chilli con carne with chocolate” does initially seem weird until you remember where chocolate (and chilli con carne) came from. Heston Blumenthal shares more of his life philosophy, in which the mechanics of cooking are only one part of a larger, fulfilling experience . This is a glorious sprawl of a book, beautifully illustrated by Dave McKean, that looks at the practical and emotional components of food… Is this a cookbook?I am avid home cook and cookbook collector and a Heston fan (lucky enough to have been going to the Fat Duck since the beginning, before it had a single star). I enjoy the stories and the theory behind what he does and while I may not follow his recipes to the nth degree I have been inspired by many recipes and incorporated some of his tricks - edible sand, sounds of the sea etc.

Put me off for years but I’ve tried some great restaurant dishes using it and am now as likely to gravitate to it as not.Although sometimes personal (like blogs), the information provided is often about the underpinning sensory approach to the recipe.

As these alternate pictorial pages are subtly decorated, many with a soft colour background, it is a refreshing change from the glossy brightness of many recipe books, as it feels homely. It’s certainly refreshing to find a chef without an enormous ego that has to be on display at all times. There are those who defend Blumnethal for staying true to his view of food as being more of an evening requirement and more of a holistic experience. There is an excellent chapter on preparing eggs any style, as well as some unique breakfast dishes, including a delicious version of Green Eggs and Ham. The exception is the Breakfast section which offers ‘Parsnip Granola’; ‘Tomato and Coffee Muffins’; ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ (Noooooooooooo! Who would have thought that a curried, apricoty chicken combo would be part of the diet of a child whose main sustenance has been pasta for around 2 years.
