BLACKBIRDS RPG is set in a dark fantasy world where a cabal of power-hungry Oligarchs has stolen godhood. This epic setup comes from Blackbirds , the latest dark fantasy role playing game powered by Zweihander from designer Ryan Verniere. The nature of these weaknesses varies wildly, but most are fairly common, such as egg yolks, water, or crowds. The game sets out with a dark and slightly macabre feel, with it's gothic chapter headers and haunting art.

With death as a constant companion, players will embody Blackbirds—those tethered to the frayed threads of Fate. The Unintelligible: It speaks in a mumbling gibberish, though its Theurge can understand it perfectly. Tabernacle, the Unwanted ChildAn Imp of the Court of Joy, who appears as a monstrously deformed fetus sitting atop a gilded altar. Berserk Button: He despises acts of weakness or selfless charity, and is enraged by anything to do with the Oligarchs. Red Baron: Soul-stealer, branch-dancer, sky-toucher, night-watcher, ghost-guide, doom-crier, carrion-feaster, charnel-beaked, ash-cloaked.

Perverse Puppet: He's an otherworldy demon in the form of a clown-like hand puppet of whoever's hand he chooses to appear on. The artwork is fantastic, the systems (it appears to be a heavily modified fork of Zweihander) looks really cool and well-focused on the type of of story they want to tell, and there are lots of very neat ideas and also lots of very grim monsters.

There's just so much to enjoy that I feel like I could run multiple groups and each time they could be vastly different due to all the options and unique elements within this game. To sever this golden cord is to plunge all of creation into chaos, a world without gods or their justice, where rebirth is the only possible salvation, and to be reborn, one must die. Full disclosure: I backed the Kickstarter campaign for this book, so the most of my feelings and the score are based upon reading the full PDF copy of the book, though I have also purchased a physical copy and looked over it as well before writing my review.Religion is Magic: Aside from Theurgy, the other source of magic available to mortals are Wortcunning Spells, which take the form of prayers and rituals dedicated to the old gods. I would have liked 5 pages telling me what the setting is about, what the PC options are, and an example of adversaries they face-- right from page 1. The lead designer is also very active engaging with the fans on discord (I won't post a link as I am unsure if its Kosher.

I only read the first collection, but I think it's about wandering mercenaries and disturbing monsters in a corrupt faux-medieval fantasy world.
