About this deal

The Rebel is a running shoe designed for runners who love soft-riding shoes. The juicy slab of FuelCell midsole foam compresses so much and so easily, even if you’re a light runner below 60 kilograms. Jacob: Fuel Cell is the name of the game here and I’m a big fan—it’s a single-slab of soft, flexible, bouncy, and energetic foam. This deployment of FuelCell minds me of the Propel v1 in it’s dramatically soft and flexible feel. There is a balanced level of cushion and foam in the Rebel v2 where it’s not tippy at the heel or sink-in-forever feeling like the TC so there is more stability and direct connection with the ground on toe-off. The forefoot has some firmness. However, it is well-cushioned and not harsh. I particularly like that New Balance has gone away from lozenges in big surfaces of rubber to this more “open” design which makes the shoe more flexible and I imagine lightens it. I would wish for a touch firm rubber in the forefoot to increase faster pace responsiveness and stability David: "The midsole cushioning absorbs most of the ground feel, and the redesigned outsole takes care of the rest. I would feel comfortable taking these up to a half-marathon distance (or even farther) without any issues."

Jacob: Last year (2019) the Rebel was one of the first shoes released employing New Balance’s FuelCell midsole. FuelCell is a perfect example of a modern foam: soft, bouncy, and energetic.Imma keep going, so T Swizz, take a seat. The upper fits so well that when you drop the hammer in a workout, it seamlessly moves with you in total comfort. I wasn’t a fan of the odd-shaped tongue at first, but by the time I am writing this, I have come to appreciate the way it fits into the form. The heel counter is gentle on the heel/Achilles while it holds the rear of your foot securely in. The Rebel v3 feels even more like a daily trainer than v2. It has improved durability, a more stable ride and a little bit more cushioning. I think New Balance achieved exactly what they were aiming for: a trainer that appeals more to the mainstream. The Rebel 2 has an outsole that we have become familiar with is some of the 2020 models we saw from New Balance. And this is where something interesting happens in the shoe. The softer foam compresses and you feel more of the road in a good way. The ground feel in this shoe firms up the ride, especially at faster paces. On the forefoot, the rubber panel is different and it makes the ride firmer. There are no longer triangular cutouts in the rubber so the squishy foam can’t push through the holes when the forefoot is loaded. Probably the best part of the Rebel v3 is the FuelCell nitrogen-infused TPU midsole, which is superlative if you love soft-and-buttery foams. It feels rather spongy and responsive and offers a smooth, natural ride.

Adam: The Rebel V2 is an extremely light and comfortable shoe which also features great energy return. However, if you’re recovering from Plantar Fasciitis or are generally injury-prone, we don’t recommend buying the Rebel V2. Personal: B+ (Really nice to run in, but with it being so soft I typically only can do 1, maybe 2, runs per week without soreness in my ankle stabilizers) Cheng: In a recent call with New Balance, RTR was asked whether this is already the Shoe of the Year in January. Although optimistic, we didn't want to make unfounded promises with 11 more months to go. Personally, I'll say that it's the 2021 Shoe of the Year THUS FAR . I rarely have a platform where I'm purposely trying to limit myself from overrunning in, but this is one. Previous readers will note that I'm a big fan of natural running and frequently train in the likes of Altra and Topo. In this context, I find myself looking at the Rebel V2's out of the corner of my eyes even as I put on a pair of Altras. This FuelCell iteration is softer than the previous version and works differently underfoot. While the original Rebel had a firmer midsole, it also had full cover crystal rubber covering the outsole. Between the rubber and the exaggerated flare on the lateral edge, the cushioning didn’t compress and expand underfoot while it rolled the runner’s foot towards a big toe take off. For some runners, this might explain why they felt the cushioning was softer and made their joints take on a little more stress.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 Intro

Sally: New Balance is on to something with this midsole, something good! I am totally in agreement with the others here: this is an outstanding non-plated shoe that can perform in any kind of condition and at any pace.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 review - RunRepeat

Bryan: The blown rubber placed extensively in the forefoot and strategically in the rear has kept the weight of the Rebel 2 down, whilst providing for ample traction. However, as mentioned by the team above, durability is a concern with some of the outsole triangle grip patterns showing wear on the lateral side only after 25km / 15 miles on concrete pavements, bitumen and some fine sandy gravel mix. In saying that, the relatively generous layer of outsole rubber gives some hope, but only time will confirm its durability. The Fuel Cell (sic) family is our line of performance, speed and rebound driven shoes but contrary to popular belief is not a midsole compound thus the vastly different rides of different shoes within the family.”The Rebel v3 has a similar mesh to version 2 but it’s not as translucent. It has a rough texture and doesn’t stretch so it feels more like a racing shoe upper than a training one. Breathability is excellent and overall comfort is very good. Once sized correctly, the upper will accommodate most runners in its standard width. There is an optional ‘wide’ size for those who need one. If not for the looming specter of premature upper failure, the New Balance Fuelcell Rebel V2 is a delightful running shoe. Stability: B- (Really soft platform with only mild stability elements, the shoe is relatively soft and flexible throughout and may give some trouble, but good for a lightweight performance shoe this soft)
