If you have enough room in the piece of wood you’re working with, you can simply drill a new hole. Filling in the hole that is too big is easy – a little wood filler, for instance, or a wood plug, since you won’t be using it. Wood glue isn’t just a good adhesive, because it can come in handy when repairing screw holes in wood. After filling it with wood glue, you might need to sand it down to get it uniform with the remaining flooring. The normal solution to this is to countersink the screw head below any surrounding timber surfaces and then fill the top of the hole using a suitable wood filler.

Stripped screw holes are more common in wood and other soft materials. You will come across them in many of your home repairs. You might think auto body filler or putty is only good for fixing dents on cars until you use it to fix screws that will not thread. The resin works magic in fixing wood screws. If the wooden dowel is taller than the hole it is filling, you can use a sharp knife or a finishing saw (Japanese-style finishing saws are our favorite) to remove the excess so the dowel is flush with the wood surface. This method is perfect for large lug screws because they have threads that are more pronounced. You can use wood glue if you don’t have Bondo auto body filler but it will not be as effective especially for fixing screws in high-pressure points. Scrap off cuts will also obviously be the same, so making them invisible once inserted into your timber is certainly more than achievable.
