About this deal

Also, I am fully on board when it comes to the larger artillery pieces that we're seeing. They seem totally on brand for the Astra Militarum.

Focused Bombardment – 1CP: Makes a Master of Ordnance’s once-per-game barrage heavy 6 instead of heavy d6. This is actually pretty OK, and increases the draw to include one of these guys if you’re bringing a bunch of Basilisks. B Converting models or buying components to customise your models can be difficult with Warhammer 40,000, as many armies are designed in ways that make them completely unlike anything available out there on the market. Possibly the best female Warhammer 40k model ever, Lord Castellan Ursula Creed is a named character HQ unit – daughter and heir to beloved Imperial Guard leader Ursarkar E. Creed. Valhallan: Fire on My Command! –Allows you to shoot targets that are within Engagement Range of friendly units, but any 1s you roll to hit scores a hit on one of your friendly units within Engagement Range. You can’t use this to shoot with a unit that is itself in Engagement Range of an enemy unit. The World Eaters area bloodthirsty Chaos Space Marine legion pledged to the blood god Khorne. The codex released alongside revamped, plastic Khorne Berzerkermodelsand a spectacular new model for the World Eaters primarch, Angron. Our reviewer Tim Linward was practically champing at the bitto build an army afterhis World Eaters codex review– they look like a fun force to see out the edition.

Pyromaniacs: Re-roll wounds of 1 with flamers, heavy flamers, or twin heavy flamers. Too narrow and honestly underwhelming even on the stuff it targets. D An industrial world, Vostroya has close links to the Mechanicus and Mars in particular. Their weapons tend to be well-maintained, out-performing other Imperial Guard regiments under similar circumstances. Their Regimental Doctrine, Heirloom Weapons, is the perfect example of this. It adds 6 inches to the range of rapid-fire and heavy weapons which have a base range of over 24 inches, making nowhere safe from a well-equipped Vostroyan force. If you’ve just been introduced to a galaxy filled with near-immortal super-soldiers, intergalactic alien invaders, and actual demons and your first thought was, “Well what if I just wanted to play normal people?,” then Astra Militarum is the faction for you. Relic – Pietrov’s MK 45: Relic bolt pistol with AP-1 and D2, but more importantly prevents more than one model fleeing from VALHALLAN units within 6″ For now, though, Astra Militarum forcesstillrely on the 8th Edition Astra Militarum Codex for their essential rules, helping to put boots on the tabletop ground. These weren't the only miniatures previewed during the event either. We also got this new Commissar which I'm in two minds about. I would have liked to have seen him doing a bit of shouting! Resplendent in golden armour atop his cybernetic horse Konstantin, Lord Solar Leontus is effectively the new ‘big boss’ of the Imperial Guard.

Mediocre Melee: The best melee unit Astra Militarum can bring to the table is Bullgryn. They’re pretty dang tanky if you have the right buffs on them but really can’t go toe to toe with a dedicated melee threat. For a fun thought exercise, roll a full Bullgryn squad into a Blade Guard Veteran squad with Transhuman, Dark Angels Terminators with Storm Shields, or Death Guard Terminators. The results are pretty depressing. Not included in the army set, but revealed in Saturday’s stream and WarCom article, are the new Commissar and Heavy Weapons team models. We don’t yet know when these (or any further new Imperial Guard models) will be released, or their cost. Space Marines were always going to be the longest book, with their 8,000,000 different units and bountiful sub-faction rules – but the 9th Edition codex is a seriously chonky tome, incorporating a whole raft of new rules from the Psychic Awakening series and the Adeptus Astartes’ own new Crusade rules.Weapon Expert: Improves the AP of turret weapons by 1. This is a nice improvement on most weapons. Also good on a punisher, helping make up for their price hike by charging them up. This has been downgraded a bit from our last update of Start Competing since it was hit particularly hard by the loss of Hammer of Sunderance (RIP 2019-2020). B This long-awaited update to the Astra Militarum line looks better than we could have expected. The 35th Anniversary Warhammer Day Stream revealed a ton of new multipart kits in this new army box so that players will have plenty of options! The new codex includes a total of 31 new Astra Militarum Stratagems. Two of these have already been previewed by GW on November 8:Vicious Traps and Acceptable Losses. You only have access to these if you have at least one Militarum Tempestus detachment in your army.

However you approach the Astra Militarum, you’ll find that they’re a strong force that embodies all that’s hopeful and noble in the grimdark Warhammer 40,000 universe. Whilst other armies can rely on magic powers or divine intervention, the Imperial Guard have only each other. The Dark Angels supplement – the fourth such Space Marine chapter supplement – features custom-made “datasheets, Warlord Traits, Relics, and a Psychic Discipline, as well as a suite of Crusade campaign rules that represent the sombre quest of the Unforgiven”, according to GW. Like the others, it’s full of army-specific datasheets, rules, and bespoke Crusade content for the Death Guard, the vile, disgustingly resilient sons of the dread Daemon Primarch Mortarion.Advanced Counter Measures – 1CP: Upgrade a Valkyrie pre-battle so that it can hover without losing Hard to Hit. This is a very useful ability that goes mildly down in value because you often won’t see value from it till turn 2, giving your opponent a chance to “waste” your CP if they pop the Valk straight off (which they will often want to). Still a pretty hefty upgrade, and maybe worth trying out. C+
