About this deal

This game is always a blast, especially when players start escaping or are knocked out, forcing the game to accelerate to its inevitable noisy climax! Moving throughout the spaceship can yield rewards, if you move over a space that has an Artifact you can pick it up, but you can only take one.

These will just collect there, perfectly innocently, until certain cards drop out of the adventure deck, triggering an attack from Eradicus and his minions. It keeps the tension really high as you play and even scores you at the end of each game based on how well you did. It’s nail biting fantasy stuff as the dragon won’t sit quietly, and you forgot to pack your flame retardant undies. The modular board includes some double-sided tiles so you can configure the ship in a multitude of different ways so it never gets stale, and you can also download the free Renegade Game Studios app to play a campaign, which also includes a solo adventure mode. The Artifacts with the higher points are in harder to reach spaces, so they come with their own risk. The Command Center (which you still need to hack dataports in two modules to access) is on top now, with all five artifacts spread out and lots of security checkpoints.

That being said, if you’re not playing with the schemes from Apocalypse, there’s no point in using some of the cards from that expansion, namely the ones that let you spend or acquire black cubes. Pulsarcade balances novelty and familiarity in a way that will make it easy for folks to pick up and enjoy regardless of their experience as a gamer. Future plays of this will go back and forth between the base and the ship, and I don’t think I’ll ever play without at least one of these expansions, if not both. There may be one or two cards, but ultimately you have 135 cards (base + expansion) and the trashing capability almost nil. The board pieces fit together SO snug that I am almost positive that the edges will become frayed after a few plays of this. The bag has 24 black cubes that do nothing, but those thin out quickly, and players can only take 10 cubes of damage before eating dirt. Play the whole shebang – the MCP and the arcade cabinets, the new modules, and the Disguise Kit (the new market item).

The missed opportunity with this expansion is that there is really no deck-thinning ability added with these new cards. So it’s not that the modularity does nothing, it absolutely does, I only wish it better integrated into the deck building too. The Cloning Vats offer you a sneaky way to protect yourself against bounty hunters (those pesky red cubes that show up near the end of the game). On top of that there is a mode that changes the base game up for multiplayer as well incorporated into the app and has a minion chasing you around the ship. You will find yourself more often than not flipping back and forth through the book trying to find something or reference something you thought you saw earlier. If someone takes a cheap artifact and leaves early, you might think you have the game in the bag if you stay and fill your pockets. The second level will allow players to trash a faction card from their hand for 5 credits (which could be good! So on every turn, players move throughout the ship using the movement cards, trying to obtain items to help them along the way.
