About this deal

These were men who made explicitly queer experimental music - an idea that fascinated me when I was younger. And Steven Stapleton, obsessive record collector and master tape-manipulator, would form Nurse With Wound. David Keenan shares the mysterious histories of Coil, Current 93 and Nurse With Wound, three different but similar experimental aural adventurers, not quite a collective but with more than nebulous ties, in ENGLAND’S HIDDEN REVERSE. Noddy had appeared in the sky crucified, and since Christ was God, therefore Noddy was also God, so he was Goddy. To enter into the work of any of these groups is to enter a world dense with intertextual references and allusions, to undergo a mind-expanding induction into a wider world full of strangeness and wonder, a recurring motif in Keenan’s own fictional work. They also shared interest in the occult, particularly the writings of Aleister Crowley, Austin Osman Spare and John Dee and Edward Kelly. Over four decades, the three intertwined groups have maintained a symbiotic, yet uneasy, relationship with the mainstream of popular culture, even as their music, beliefs, and practices have repelled them from it.Er schafft es auch, verschiedene Epöchlein, künstlerische Entwicklungsschritte und die handelnden Figuren so gut anzuordnen und ins Verhältnis zu bringen, dass nicht nur eine Art Sippencharakter, sondern daraus auch ein ungemein schlüssiger Lesefluss entsteht. This new volume contains almost 100 pages of extra material culled from Furfur, a collection of interviews with musicians and artists whose careers intersected with the bands', initially published alongside Strange Attractor's first limited edition of the book. It’s a touching and frequently funny read for mature adults interested in experimental post-industrial music of the 80’s and 90’s. Newly expanded black and white paperback edition, featuring 60 pages of extra interviews and reflections from Furfur, a collection of bonus material published in a limited edition in 2016.

It is true that many subsequently repudiated these dalliances, but there is no doubt that it was an element of the scene for a while and a full discussion of this would have added to the overall picture. Part of the appeal of England’s Hidden Reverse comes from the ways in which Keenan manages to describe the elusive quality of all of these groups’ music, finding the areas in which they stake out common ground and in which they differ. It's something of a history of a particular era and mindset in Great Britain, focusing on three bands in particular: Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. It genuinely felt like the end of an era of experimental, underground music, one which has receded even further into the past over the intervening 20 years, even as C93 and NWW have continued to release great music and Coil’s mythic legacy has only grown in stature. The text is a fascinating look at the lives of London-based musicians from these and other bands and the interconnected nature of their social and artistic endeavours. He is also the author of England's Hidden Reverse (Strange Attractor Press), a history of the UK's post-punk/Industrial underground, as well as To Run Wild In It and Empty Aphrodite, (Rough Trade Books), two experimental novellas, and the co-designer, alongside Sophy Hollington, of his own tarot pack, the Autonomic Tarot (Rough Trade Books). All of them started in the late 1970s/early 1980s, following the post-punk flourish in 1977 and 1978. The stage adaptation of his debut novel This is Memorial Device won the Fringe First award for best play at the Edinburgh Festival 2022.

A shame really - the 'esoteric underground' that Keenan focuses on is a deeply rich seam of myth and invention, far beneath the darkest extremes of British 'alternative' culture and even the transgressive norms of the 'Industrial' music scene they sprang from; the stories of the bands are correspondingly challenging and engaging. David Keenan’s England’s Hidden Reverse: A Secret History of the Esoteric Underground was first published in 2003. this new edition has a new foreward and afterward, the former seeming a bit bitter (though i did laugh when he took godspeed down a few pegs, and rightfully so). Keenan does his best to make most Current 93 releases sound like essential listening, but perhaps I'm missing something in the music. It includes references to their (often shared) esoteric and literary inspirations – such as Crowley, Spare and Burroughs. Throbbing Gristle had created a kind of defiled psychedelia that all three bands stretched and redefined in their own ways, drawing on the esoteric Magickal lore of Aleister Crowley, Austin Osman Spare and a host of other fringe figures, and pursuing a common interest in altered states of consciousness.
