The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 44mm offers a 1.36-inch always-on AMOLED display, a 410mAh battery, 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, weighing 33.5g. The 40mm version is no less impressive. Its 1.19-inch display is smaller, but there's the same amount of RAM (1.5GB) and the same amount of onboard storage space (16GB). It's also a touch lighter, weighing 28.7g. Again, the bright display really helps to sell the visual style of these watch faces, and there’s plenty of customisation on offer for adding complications and even tweaking the colour of the dials. They make an already great collection even better – with the exception of the AR Emoji watch face, which I can firmly say isn’t my cup of tea (and I’d be surprised if it was anyone else’s, either). Building upon last year’s capacity, the Galaxy Watch 5 boosts capacity from 361mAh to 410mAh – which, coming from an Apple Watch SE that requires a daily charge, is certainly a welcome upgrade.The typical capacity has been tested under third party laboratory conditions. The typical capacity is the estimated average capacity considering the deviation in battery capacity among the battery samples tested under the IEC 61960-3 standard. Rated capacity is 398mAh for Large and 276mAh for small. Actual battery life may vary depending on network environment, usage patterns and other factors. The Watch 5's silicone band material is also hairy-wrist-friendly, and has a perpetual matte texture that keeps it from tugging on the skin too. For someone not used to wearing a smartwatch, the Watch 5 is a soft landing when it comes to comfort. It isn't too big, and the default Sports Strap keeps it in place. You might be thinking that Wear OS means the Watch 5 syncs with Google Fit, and it does, but not by default. Out of the box, this is a Samsung Health gadget (and Samsung Health doesn't sync with Google Fit). You can, however, install Google Fit and switch out your defaults, but you'll be saying goodbye to the integrated metric monitoring Samsung's Watch makes a big deal of – specifically, sleep and body composition.

The GPS was also accurate, though the metric that was most at odds with our other tools was the bodyfat measurement. This isn't surprising – different mechanisms for measuring bodyfat generally generate different results. That said, if you just use the Watch 5, it sets a reliable starting point, even if it isn't as accurate as a caliper or full body measure. Available on samsung.com in select countries. Battery time is based on our own laboratory measurements, and may vary depending on factors such as device settings, usage patterns and operating conditions. Running Wear OS 3, both Google and Samsung are still finding their feet in the wider smartwatch space. The operating system is richer when it comes to apps and features than those of the semi-smartwatch competition like the Huawei GT 3, but you don't quite get the polish Apple's watchOS brings to the table. In our time with the watch, we dinged the screen against a metal table frame, and despite being convinced it was a goner when we felt it thud, the Watch 5 came off totally unscathed.
