About this deal

On the nose: citrus, almost warm lemonade. Custard cream biscuits. Grassy. It needs a lot of time to settle before some rather nice perfumed notes begin to show: jasmine. Rose fragrance, the kind that ladies of a certain age tend to wear. Then a creamy vanilla, lemon curd and custard. Very custardy, in fact, with touches of condensed milk. Taste, neat: As with most cask-strengthers, I take just a teeny sip neat, mainly to get an idea as to how much water to add. A good mouthful usually results in little more than burn and hiccups. This is surprisingly gentle on the arrival, with peppery spices dominating, but the flames start the longer you hold it in your mouth. If that’s the case, there’s no room for experimentation, trials and – let’s be honest – a bit of fun. This will give us some weeks in the summer and winter to just have a play and lay down some exciting new spirit.’ Glenmorangie Astar owes its character to the use of first-fill American oak casks, chosen for the wood’s porous structure (eight to 12 growth rings per inch).

From Balblair we drove to Glenmorangie, through a series of gentle uplands and well cultivated farm lands, calling on our way at the residence of Mr Matheson, who received us courteously and entertained us hospitably. We then drove with him to the Distillery, some half-mile distant, which is certainly the most ancient and primitive we have seen, and now almost in ruins.’ Friedli, Douglas (29 August 2004). a b c d e "Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky". Glenmorangie. Archived from the original on 1 September 2007 . Retrieved 29 September 2007.For some years, The Glenmorangie Company supplied its whisky for the production of "own brand" blended whisky by supermarket groups. [10] The practice ceased in 2009 when it sold off the Glen Moray brand.

Over the last five years Glenmorangie has won more "Gold Best in Class" awards than any other single malt Scotch whisky from the International Wine and Spirits Competition. [28] In 2012, the IWSC awarded The Glenmorangie Company the title Distiller of the Year. The Astar’s extraordinary casks are hewn from hand-selected slow-grown oak trees from the Ozark mountains of Missouri, and meticulously crafted to exacting specifications, to ensure they impart their maximum flavour to our delicate Highland spirit.” The launch comes as the distillery prepares the second release in its Bond House No 1 series of vintage expressions (replacing the discontinued 25-year-old) – a 1989 vintage single malt following the release of Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1990 earlier this year. Finish: The burn eventually cools to dry menthol-anise on underripe pear. A minute later, there is raw cashew and a faint echo of coconut. It’s a plan for the future, designed to meet both demand and ambition. ‘We can make 6m litres of spirit a year at the moment,’ explains McCarron, ‘and pretty soon we’ll need 6m litres a year.
