About this deal

The production starred Polish film actress Magdalena Cielecka and featured a number of other performers from TR Warszawa in supporting roles. A great deal of ink has been spilled on Kane’s too-short life and death, and not nearly enough on the story of the play itself. Ionesco wrote this book, Notes and Counternotes, which is a compilation of essays and interviews and various speeches that he made throughout life, all about theater.

The first such adaptation of Kane's works, the production was approved by Sarah Kane's brother, and received critical acclaim. The interpretations and responses that we have received so far have not been very pleasant, of course, with many even seeing it as an example of ‘theatre of cruelty’. The spring after her death, Simon Kane contacted director James Macdonald, who had debuted both Blasted and Cleansed; he agreed to take the project on, and set about trying to persuade the Royal Court. After entering a collaboration with BLT, we further devised and worked on it, before premiering the play in the city on November 13. When he got the news that his sister had taken an overdose, Simon rushed to visit her in hospital, then went to her flat in Brixton to collect some belongings. in its small upstairs studio, the very same space where Blasted had premiered five years earlier, but even when tickets rapidly sold out, many in the building remained nervous. This dilemma is possibly one of the reasons that over the years theatremakers around the world have avoided staging British playwright-director Sarah Kane’s enigmatic yet distressing plays.

In one essay, he’ll contradict what he just said in the previous essay, or he’ll say something completely opposite of anything he’s ever said, and that’s where the idea of Notes and Counternotes derives from.Replete with shocking confessions, piercing monologues and raw visuals, there aren’t any positive takeaways from the one-hour-12-minute performance to be honest. Ensemble, 12 players: alto flute + picc, 3 saxes (all sop+bar), piano+synth with organ pedalboard, accordion, 2 percussion (solo roles, some playing from memory), vln+vla, 2 vla, bass.

End of the day, theatre is a form of art and its aesthetics are crucial to keeping the audience’s attention. The vivid and raw nature of the text made it difficult for us to detach from it when not at rehearsals, let alone taking artistic liberties during its making,” says actor Shatarupa Bhattacharyya, who portrays a state of Sarah’s mind, in which she has already gone through a lot in life, and has now “accepted and made peace with the fact that death is her final destination”. She was there to talk about her plays – Blasted, which had scandalised and horrified the critical establishment back in 1995, and her equally mould-breaking dramas Cleansed and Crave, both of which had opened earlier that year. Stage productions of the play vary greatly, therefore, with between one and several actors in performance; the original production featured three actors.Certain images are repeated within the script, particularly that of "hatch opens, stark light"; a repeated motif in the play is " serial sevens" which involves counting down from one hundred by sevens, a bedside test often used by psychiatrists to test for loss of concentration or memory. The opera was first presented in 2016 by the Royal Opera in London, in a production by Ted Huffman, and has subsequently seen productions in London, New York City, Strasbourg and Dresden. While Blasted and Cleansed and Crave have long been acknowledged for the radical theatrical masterpieces they are, 4. At the time, the last thing I would have wanted to say is that it’s a suicide note – I knew it wasn’t just that, that was the point.

Its language varies between dialogues, confessions and contemplative poetic monologues reminiscent of schizophasia. Old Red Lion Theatre (Tangram Theatre, 2006), Arcola Theatre (2006), the Young Vic Theatre (2009), the Barbican Theatre (TR Warszawa, Easter 2010), Access Theatre (Raw Theatre Group, Easter 2010), The Theatre Project (Off Off-Broadway - The Red Room, Summer 2010), ADC Theatre (October 2010), York Theatre Royal (March 2011), Sittingbourne Community College Theatre Company (July 2011), The Hamilton Fringe Festival at Theatre Aquarius [Black Box Fire Theatre Company, July 2011] and the George Ignatieff Theatre at University of Toronto (27–29 October 2011), Fourth Monkey Theatre Company (March 2012), Rangi Ruru Girls' School performed it in the New Zealand Theatre Federation Festival (September 2012), Crooked Pieces (Drayton Theatre London, September 2012), The Questors Theatre (January 2015), director Roza Sarkisian and Theatre Actor, Kyiv, Ukraine (2018), Anton's Well Theater Company, Oakland, California (July—August 2018), and Chico State Theater Company at California State University, Chico (December 2022). Mental health issues are still a stigma in our society, so telling such an account is bound to have repercussions. The grotesquerie of Kane’s theater is not simply self-indulgent; it is meant, very directly, to shock the audience out of their comfort zone and into a more nightmarish reality.Narrating stories of depression and anxiety on stage can be difficult, especially if the storyline sounds more like a ‘suicide note’ than the script of a play. The creative team decided to invite groups of actors to read through the text, to plot out how many voices were needed, who might speak where.
