The electricity generated by the Hill Top Energy Centre will be evacuated through a 4.83km 500kV power transmission line connecting the Pennsylvania-Jersey-Maryland (PJM) transmission network.

The battery will be integrated with the existing power infrastructure and will provide crucial support to the National Grid during times of peak demand. The battery is expected to go live in 2025, and it will be the longest-duration battery asset to be connected to the UK grid. The other infrastructure facilities for the project include a 2,000KW emergency diesel generator along with a 422 horsepower (hp) emergency diesel fire water pump. While the emergency diesel generator will facilitate maintenance of plant loads during power outages or switchyards maintenance, the diesel-fired pump will be used during emergency fire incidents as well as for routine operations and testing.

Kiewit Constructions was engaged as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project while General Electric (GE) was selected for the supply, installation, along with a multi-year services agreement for the turbines and generators of the facility in May 2019. The Hill Top Energy Centre combined-cycle power project is located approximately 1.6km north of Nemacolin town in Cumberland township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, US. The 30 MWh system power battery system will be capable of delivering more than 7 MW of power on demand and able to store enough energy to power 2,500 homes for over two hours. This investment could prove to be a pivotal moment for the UK’s energy grid, and we hope to see it have global ramifications, to stimulate more of this type of investment into LDES around the world. The grid-scale battery will be assembled in Scotland, at Invinity’s factory in Bathgate, West Lothian.
