About this deal

Finally, given the importance of parallel universes in this film, it is possible that every single theory or interpretation of the story is correct, each possibility occurring in a different universe: in one universe, Davies may have been insane, or he may have been under the influence of a government conspiracy - and so on. At a different point, Brooker wanted Stefan's father's blood to splatter across the viewer's cereal choice. In his notes, he repeatedly sketched a lambda-like glyph reminiscent of a fork in a road, which apparently represented potential realities splitting into new timelines.

That is why all twenty illustrations (done by Damir Mazinjanin) that you’ll find inside are from Alice’s point of view; each pulling you a bit further into the story and showing the plot from a unique angle. She works in communications at New City Church in North Carolina, handling much of the stuff that goes on screens or paper (or signs, or t-shirts, or pens, or mugs…. G. Wodehouse’s words on it: “There is no surer foundation for a beautiful friendship than a mutual taste in literature. Orwell isn’t the only literary influence on the surreal choose-your-own-adventure flick, as Stefan’s story centers on the mysterious sci-fi tome that gives the episode its name. Glyer discusses the necessary components of The Inklings and provides an excellent epilogue with ideas on how to get started with your own group.

But Captain Sheldon and crew soon learn that like in wartime, even the best laid plans don’t go the way one wants. In yet another possible interpretation of events, literally everyone who works on Bandersnatch or its adaptations begins to experience the similar symptoms, beginning with a loss of control over their lives and an inexplicable inability to get the narrative to work; in one ending, Pearl encounters some of these symptoms before she wisely gives up on the game, and in another possible conclusion, the actor playing Stefan suffers a breakdown and becomes lost in character.

I skimmed through portions of this book in the public library many moons ago and it stuck with me all these years. A 1980s period piece and a work of science fiction, Bandersnatch also contains elements of comedy, horror and pathos. Orange-red thread was used for binding the book, which was then glued afterwards to provide maximum durability. Of course, nothing is stopping you from playing regular chess or even checkers using only the pawns.

But most importantly, this edition comes in a luxurious wooden box, with beautiful carving of the title on both of its sides and with a lot of surprises on the inside.

A bonus in this book is the inclusion of suggestions for emulating the Inklings, which appear at the end of each chapter. If you follow that line of thinking to its logical conclusion, then you're absolved of any guilt from your actions. While Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a beloved book with many adaptations, the 19th-century author has become a controversial figure in more recent years. In some ways, it struck me that this book does have analogies to The Whale, in other ways, more modern-recognized themes such as PTSD and how one dealt with it (alkyhol). Dick also spoke of the messages he was convinced he had been receiving from a spiritual entity, which obviously ties into Stefan’s growing fears as he begins to communicate with an otherworldly force while trying to hit his deadline and finish his game. Both normal and Giant Bandersnatches move slowly and will not normally attack unless first hit is activated. Bandersnatches are the subject of a difficult algorithm design project for an apparently NP-complete problem in the academic theoretical computer science book by M.
