The Blacktongue Thief is the fantasy debut by Cristopher Buehlman, although he has previously published a few horror works. This book is incredibly fast-paced, and it feels like there is a new adventure in each chapter, which does not leave the reader any time to contemplate the broader scope of this story and world.

Think of it as a student loan, except once you owe The Taker’s Guild, they firmly hold you in their clutches, and paying them back is one hell of a deadly task. But the target was already moving—she crouched and turned so fast she seemed to disappear behind the shield. Kinch’s narrative voice finds a balance between wise-assery and wisdom, using snappy and succinct dialogue to get his messages delivered.

The Blacktongue Thief is a bonafide instant classic, and I sure as hell can’t wait to see what Buehlman comes up with next.Buehlman’s world-building is quite intricate, and it took me a while to get a handle on the social set-up, background and geopolitics. He’s just such a lovable main character; snarky, sarcastic, continuously smile in the face of adversity. And now it was likely off to be sold for next to nothing and the two shytes who will have taken it so far ahead of me I had little chance to catch them. We're talking giants and goblins, vast oceans filled with Kraken and other deadly creatures, and that's just to start. Thing about springwood is, if it’s properly cured and cared for, it’s known to stay living after it’s been cut and heal itself.
