The one thing Tempest did not manage to achieve quite so successfully, in my opinion, was the ‘plot’ of her poem and especially its links to ancient heroism. Tempest is an accomplished musician as well as a poet, and this short book has a lyrical, musical quality.Kate Tempest is indeed a skilled wordsmith, and Brand New Ancients showcases the full range of her lyrical talent, stylistic repertoire, and linguistic creativity. You would never know, reading this, that London was an international city; the prospect of multiple cultures never darkens this doorstep. Tempest’s work as a rapper is clear, and I think Brand New Ancients works best read aloud to really appreciate the work that has gone into crafting this poem.

I do not generally seek out poetry as a genre but if this is what I have been missing, I need to find more. They received the Ted Hughes Award for their long-form narrative poem Brand New Ancients and the Leone D’Argento at the Venice Teatro Biennale for their work as a playwright.It’s the kind of story that deserves to be read all in one go, preferably with tea, and lose yourself into the world of these characters whose lives intersect in ways that are recognisable to the reader. I didn't want to read a story/poem about the intertwining fates of people trying to people and people trying to be monsters.

One thing I noticed it that some of the wording on the audio differs from the printed version, and in most cases the words used on the audio are better. Frankly, it would be easy to dismiss some of her message, to be cynical or guarded, but I tried not to be, and I found a lot of wisdom and love in what she was saying.A fascinating idea that is also well executed by Kae Tempest as the poem shows how these modern day people have commonalities with the ancient gods through their actions and emotions. Kate Tempest connects this very familiar tale of love, disillusionment, violence, betrayal, and personal tragedy with the idea of everyday heroism, which she understands as analogous to ancient Greek myth. And I have to add that reading this book with the author reading it + the music was excellent, it added a real tension, an authentic atmosphere.
