About this deal

In the past yi couldnae move fir sumwan chattin aboot it, stickin it oan lists and Twitching all oer tha innernet. During each season Explore cards will be flipped up one at a time and, in addition to dictating which shapes and features may be drawn that turn, these cards will also use up time as well. If a monster falls in this area at any point, it is destroyed and crossed out, meaning it has no impact. Similarly, is it better to draw a terrain that will score earlier (taking immediate points) or making certain that the card that hasn't scored yet will score well later--and twice? When The Isle of Cats was announced as the next game from Frank West's The City of Games, I must admit I wasn't expecting this to be a contender for that hard-to-find game that appealed to my whole family.

They add a bit more flexibility, which is always welcome in games where sometimes, you are just going to paint yourself into a corner. Each player receives a pencil and the same double-sided map, agreeing before the start of the game which side to use. Rift Lands mean that each player draws a 1×1 square anywhere on their map of the terrain type on the card. One side is a normal map with the reverse side containing a cavern in the middle, restricting your available space and thus making it more difficult. When an Ambush card gets flipped up, you’re going to have to pass your map sheet to one of your neighbors and then they will have the opportunity to draw in the assigned monster feature on your sheet. I’m a lousy artist and drawing something that would look recognizable in that small a space would take way too much time, so I try to get by with abbreviations for the different terrain types, which usually confuse my opponents and sometimes myself. Yet outside some of the card names, it's easy enough to ignore this (does it matter that the ambush is Kobolds, or that it's a four-square T?

I love Nebblis and Undercity, like Frozen Expanse and Kethra's Steppe, and will probably leave Affril and Hornhelm alone from here on out. I had to get new thinner whiteboard markers just so I could play this game optimally on my own laminated sheets! The game is split into four seasons, with scoring happening at the end of each season, forcing players to pivot their strategy at the end of each season, depending on which scoring cards are used for a given season. The season continues until the value of the revealed cards equals or exceeds the number on the season card. As someone who likes to play Clever and Welcome To with his girlfriend, you might find it surprising to hear this is actually the first game in this genre that I have played solo – but gosh darn it do I like it! There’s a pictorial scoring example on each Edict card along with a text explanation, and the back of the rules handbook has useful further explanations to clarify any queries. Spring and Summer both have a threshold of eight, while Fall has seven, and finally Winter with six.
