The overall color balance hasn’t changed, but there’s more depth to the warm, golden hues that suffuse Drive. British label Second Sight has revealed that it is working on a 4K Blu-ray release of Nicolas Winding Refn's thriller Drive (2011), starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, and Óscar Isaac. We reviewed the UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Drive on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

And while the new 4K presentation reveals some of the source limitations, the film has never looked better and is a worthwhile upgrade for fans. Drive gets the Limited Edition 4K UHD/Blu-ray treatment, arriving on 6th June 2022, the exquisite collectable, bonus-filled box set is presented by Second Sight Films and Nicolas Winding Refn. Refn being Refn, he didn’t take that road, and instead followed his own muse with his follow-up vehicle Only God Forgives, a film that’s deliberately designed to frustrate viewer expectations. To borrow a term from Thomas Harris, most of Refn’s films have been about Becoming, as his characters usually undergo a metamorphosis of some kind throughout their stories. It’s only the background details that sometimes show the limitations of the 1080p capture, with grass and other vegetation looking softer and less defined. Of course, Drive had done something similar, albeit to a lesser extent, but still enough so that one person actually filed a lawsuit against distributor FilmDistrict for false advertising.Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. The lead villian Madison is a crazy over the top Character, who actually has to go out of his way not to kill our hero, due to the bio of implant in his stomach. Or, rather, they’re forced to team up after a relentless assassin named Madison (John Pyper-Ferguson) is dispatched to retrieve the bio device.

MVD Entertainment Group and 88 Films have arrived on the 4K market with the kind of worthwhile, well-appointed release they’re both best known for.

For somebody like me that wants only the best, this doesn't work even if they put the movie on one disc and placed the extras on a Blu-ray. The unexpected commercial success of Drive notwithstanding, Refn’s sensibilities were never meant for the mainstream. Be warned that there is actually very little driving in this film, despite the fact that it is about a stunt driver.

While the basic narrative of Drive does have some obvious points of comparison with both The Driver and Thief, Refn’s wasn’t really interested in Hill or Mann’s thematic concerns. Sent to America from overseas, you need to package these things better, the cardboard is super thin and the corner was bashed in, damaging the whole boxset through the j-card and down to the box and what’s inside it.On the disc itself we get a number of worthy new extras including; a new exclusive audio commentary by director Nicolas Winding Refn and The Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw; Cutting a Getaway - a new Interview with Mat Newman; 3 Point Turns - a new Video Essay by Leigh Singer, as well as Drive, a 70 minute Conversation with Nicolas Winding Refn, Editor Mat Newman and Composer Cliff Martinez.
