Inspired by the old pistards helmet made in leather, the new foldable helmet by Carrera is the revolution in the city bike protection.

The reason is likely that the helmet is still new to market– Hedkayse is currently working on getting CPSC approved.

For a helmet with an extra-small footprint in your bag, there’s Overade’s Plixi Fit, which folds up in several directions (albeit in a slightly complex way) into a compact shape a third of its size when unfolded. The Carrera comes with a lockable belt to keep it folded shut, and I also used this to strap my trousers tight to my ankle while out and about. FEND helmets are designed to solve the problems of traditional helmets that are bulky, hot, and inconvenient. I needed a better option, so in a bit of a gamble (I had not yet read a Fend helmet review), I chose the FEND Helmet, a foldable bike helmet that has forever transformed the relationship I have with my bike.

The flexible frame also helps the helmet to fit into a bag or drawer as it is made of strips of plastic coated EPS joined by nylon bands. Looks are a very personal thing - I think the Carrera looks quite odd, but in some circles this would be deemed deeply cool. PROTECTION AND RESISTANCE TO IMPACT: The Closca HELMET unisex helmet covers the most sensitive part of the head, and protects it against any impact caused by an accident.The last helmet I wrecked suffered a side-impact that broke one of the spars that is essentially missing in this design. There are no protruding or hard plastic pieces on the inside, and the padding is great for cushioning your head. The chin straps adjust at three points, plus the helmet has an “X-strap” in the back which can be adjusted, and a velcro strap to adjust the overall helmet size. However, there are a number of folding helmets that have come on the market since then which beat out the Pango in most ways.

But seriously, a Closca helmet very literally saved my head when I went over the handlebars on my bike. However, like all helmets, the protective function can only be assured if the helmet has been certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for regular bike helmets.

I like the whole concept of the folding helmet, and have to agree, I feel naked without a domecover. The manufacturers claim it can protect you against falls on smooth surfaces, as well as swellings, scratches, bruises and grazes, perhaps even against light concussion. I felt a little silly wearing it, and could foresee it getting sweaty on a long, warm ride, but it’s certainly a conversation-starter. Today’s folding helmets are smaller, lighter, easier to fold, and look better, so it’s no surprise that most people prefer the newer designs instead.
