About this deal

Our disturbing protagonist, Leo, an outsider by his own and any other standards, witnesses a suicide by one of the camp's more popular teens. Inspired by David Copperfield, Kingsolver crafts a 21st-century coming-of-age story set in America’s hard-pressed rural South. Leonard is an outsider, a seventeen-year-old uncomfortable in his own skin who is forced to endure a family camping holiday in the South of France. It’s not necessary to have read Dickens’ famous novel to appreciate Kingsolver’s absorbing tale, but those who have will savor the tough-minded changes she rings on his Victorian sentimentality while affirming his stinging critique of a heartless society.

If you do nothing to prevent someone from dying does that make you a murderer or merely an unfortunate bystander? There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. But the lineage is there, in the language, in the staccato sentences, and most of all in the fatalism, the sense that we have no control and this is simply the way it had to be. Uncomfortable in his own skin and struggling to find his footing in the world, Leonard is clearly a fish out of water in a holiday resort where social constructs are enforced with partying, drinking and organised activities. In fact, it’s stated up front in this captivating first paragraph: “Oscar is dead because I watched him die and did nothing. Léonard is 17 en brengt met zijn ouders, jongere broer en zus de laatste vakantiedagen op de camping door. I raced through the novella, appreciated the brevity of the writing and the emotions of the character.

I’m not normally that keen on translated fiction, which this is, but I really did quite like this one. Victor Jestin succeeds in transporting us with almost nothing, this unique style, this voice—one might almost say these whispers. I did think that maybe this was the stupidest mistake of all, but I did it anyway, just to do something.

All this while the parents have their own fun at the other end of the beach where a bunny-costumed host is prancing around, shouting Olé!

A short but powerful novella that explores rumination on death and guilt as interrupters of normal quotidian life. Over the next 24 hours, Leo wanders around the campsite like a sleepwalker, haunted by guilt and fear, and distracted by his desire for a girl named Luce.

It's small and French and the main character is indifferent and angsty and also someone dies violently. Disoriented by the oppressive heat, and distracted by his desire for a girl named Luce, Leonard spends the ensuing hours trying not to unravel. The novel, rejected by Wright’s publisher, has only appeared as a substantially truncated short story until now, without the opening setup and with a different ending. Over the next twenty-four hours, Leo wanders around the campsite like a sleepwalker, haunted by guilt and fear, and distracted by his desire for a girl named Luce. The series of events that follow are a little confusing and don't necessarily make sense without us knowing what kind of person Leonard is.
