I'm surprised with how highly rated this book is as it's one of the worst books that I've read recently. Even though I occasionally thought it moved a little slowly, I truly liked this book and would recommend it.

I enjoyed discovering how everything functioned and observing how the magic impacted every other aspect of the narrative. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated.Likable characters, unique and interesting magic systems, and a very special, very delightful sense of charm that wiggles under your skin and hooks you tight are some of Charlie N. While most meanings are guessable if you know their meanings in English, it's worth going through the list as they come up regularly in the plot. Honestly, I can't even tell you what really happened in this book and I probably should have put it down without it being finished. Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda's work still proves unexpectedly difficult. She is a tamer of possessed and enchanted houses and sees it as her duty to preserve the disappearing magic in such ancient houses.
