About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I must say "Mistress" is the first historical romance novel i have ever read by Amanda Quick (aka Jayne ann Krentz) who is one of my top favourite authors. But even though he thinks that Iphiginia is the blackmailer, he doesn't put a stop on her charade and plays along with her, decided to see how far she'll go.

I also loved how Marcus lived by strict rules that he breaks for the sake of his love for Iphiginia and was interested in astronomy and steam engines. The latter half of the story becomes predictable when the hero demands marriage because it's the "right thing to do" and the heroine refuses because she's being asked for the "wrong reasons. It was typially Amanda Quick with a overly rational heroine (I hate a woman who argues and argues and thinks this makes her look smart) and a high-handed earl. I am devastated to hear that being my mistress has not been quite as entrancing as your tour of antiquities. Amelia was a good character who I really feel could have had her own book, one of my favourite scenes with her is when she's trying to stop Marcus and Iphiginia from bickering, good comedic fun.

Iphiginia is a exuberant, independent and intellectual woman, and to Marcus Valerius Cloud,Earl of Masters, she was like a shooting star who lit up the dark sky in his world. Hot lovemaking, good amount of angst, interesting secondary characters with a few love stories thrown in there too- all concluding in a heartwarming ending.

There were then imitators, and they were many, and Their name was Legion, and they did taketh the Chaste Kiss that endeth the Regency Novel, and turn it into page after page of instructional descriptions on how to make the Beast with Two Backs. Marcus was wonderful, he had so many good scenes, from their first meeting in the ballroom to the one at the 'Drs', and so many fabulous lines which gave you an insight to him; his sense of humour and desires. I liked the woman that Iphiginia is, like an 18th century Nancy Drew, but I just found myself rolling my eyes every time an intimate moment arrived. When Marcus is done being led around by the dick, he may remember that he is a person who might like to have his wishes respected, who once had a complete life without her, and who may notice the contempt they both feel for each other beneath the lust.

Perhaps it was somewhat of a departure from what might have happened during the Regency period of English history but I'm not living during that time and the book was not written during that time.

My favourite line of his: "You have taught me to break most of my other rules, Iphiginia, teach me to break this one, too", gorgeous! This was only my third book by Amanda Quick, but I knew what to expect from her: a funny and charming story with a bright but quirky heroine who defies society's conventions, a brooding hero who's in need of an emotional makeover and a somewhat convoluted mystery to be solved while the H/h fall in love with each other. She uses the name Jayne Ann Krentz for her contemporary pieces, Amanda Quick for her historical fiction pieces, and Jayne Castle for her futuristic pieces. Though this is an oldie, it remains one of my absolute favorites on that keeper shelf, and I really cannot find any fault in this book. But alas, with the passing of the decades, I am no longer entranced by fashion porn, and romance characters strike me as distractingly stupid.I started flagging about a third of the way through, but at the end I read really fast and this seemed to help. I loved the mystery, intrigue, the witty dialuges and the main-characters lived up my day with their entertaining and funny love-story. Before she began writing full time she worked as a librarian in both academic and corporate libraries. She comes to London posing as the mistress of the Earl of Masters who is out of town and rumored to be dead. She was honest, did not run away from her feelings and made the hero listen to her, instead of giving in to his or society's dictates. See, she's sure she'll find the blackmailer among them and she believes Masters is dead, so her plan is quite brilliant, isn't it? Overall, he was a well-drawn hero and it was very nice to see him breaking all his rules and becoming a better person in the end.

Everything was just wrong with this book, but the straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that Iphiginia was so bloody ridiculous and so damn stupid to live. But when Marcus agrees to play along with her charade, she doesn't know that the determined earl has plans of his to tease and tempt her, until the beautiful deceiver becomes more than his mistress in name only. Marcus married Iphiginia and they lived HEA, but she'd be forever viewed as "the mistress who got lucky and managed to marry her lover" because her true identity was never revealed to the ton. His wife has left again and the sight of a sweaty woman — any sweaty woman — is enough to get his hormones going. It has one of the most charming opening chapters ever - I love the first chapter and Iphigenia and Marcus meeting for the first time!
