About this deal

There is a name that Rupert uses to describe a woman's private parts which I would like to never see again in my life because. I like learning more about the world of horse racing and the sort of ‘how the other half live’ insight which we as readers get in these books. As a 14-year-old fan I was frankly astounded that such a thing as a vulgar garden could exist, but apparently it can. Jilly is about bringing joy into your life: daft, silly, boozy joy, and if you like joy, you’ll like this. Some years ago when I was in my mid-teens, I picked up a copy of Polo, which is the third of this series where every book can be read as a standalone, and really enjoyed it.

Using this book as a guide to British humour would leave one with the impression that a good joke is something crude mixed with something racist, barely advanced from Fawlty Towers. JC’s attempts to play this off as a romantic love affair are ruined by Rupert’s cries of ‘oh butterc*nt’ and Gala’s reluctance to tell Rupert that Taggie has cancer until she’s bedded him again. But the fact that there isn’t much of a plot doesn’t really matter, because that’s not what Jilly is about. That said, it's still peak daft Cooper: superlatives and bad puns galore, animals better characterized than half the humans, horses, parties, and everyone gets a new polo neck sweater that's just the right shade to set off their eyes.

I am not usually a fan drama - this reads like a soapie - but this is so fast paced that I absolutely flew through the nearly 600 pages in only a few days. It also implied her marriage wasn't that brilliant and I wonder if she therefore just couldn't let Rupert and Taggie live happily ever after - or without him shagging the vile Gala. One thing that I enjoyed was the relationship between Eddie, Rupert's father who has dementia, and Love Rat, Rupert's favorite stud. When I got to the end I actually re-read the last couple of chapters as I wasn't ready to let the story go yet. In Cooper’s latest blockbuster—again set in the horse-racing world—it’s certainly not difficult to tell what she thinks of any of the characters.

I felt, however, that Jilly just didn't have the vim and vigour to pursue any social commentary to any degree in this story; I think that she was tired. It was only by chance watching the hotel programme of the launch of Mount that I knew about this one but I'm so glad I saw it!
