Jordan is always praised for giving a true identity to the peoples of his world and it really shines through in this novel. Tom Anderson is the author of SLP books including the Look To The West series ( Diverge and Conquer , Uncharted Territory , Equal and Opposite Reactions , Cometh the Hour ), The Twilight's Last Gleaming , Not An English Word , The Curse of Maggie , The Unreformed Kingdom , The Surly Bonds of Earth and Well met by Starlight .
Four years ago, I fell in love with Wheel of Time and read all 15 volumes in less than three months. The game engine divides the world into chunks and only keeps the relevant ones in memory, which allows massive map sizes without hogging RAM. Sadly, Lan had only one PoV chapter at the beginning, followed by about 180 pages in Moiraine‘s PoV; all in all, Moiraine’s viewpoint totals roughly 70% and Lan‘s only about 25%. And certainly it may seem churlish to make a criticism that Jordan made Moiraine’s character more distinct from the ‘this is just one more adventure in my long life’ wizardly fantasy archetypes he initially ripped off. They talk with the people at the centre to make sure that they are trained and helped to do their job as well as possible.Due to that, it was a lot more contained and largely took place in two main settings, instead of all over the continent, which worked really well for this. This was the first time that I read New Spring, which tells the story of Moiraine and Lan 20 years before the start of the main series. Like totally different people, which was unexpected off course, but normally when I read about Moiraine, Siuan or Lan, they are generally so composed and calm characters who are always in control and are largely confident of themselves.
He was a history buff and enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, poker, chess, pool, and pipe collecting. I tried listening with headphones, but that just makes the bad audio quality stand out even more and is very grating on the ears. It includes extra bonus material of developmental art, script pages, and correspondence between Jordan and Dixon. I'd like to point out the characters are pure, rather innocent and for children reading this book it is likely one of the few books out there today that is well done without all the sex and vulgarity found in many other books. I am glad that I have read it and glad that I have read it last and not in the middle of the series. The centre will provide families with a structured, nurturing environment while maintaining a clear focus on the holistic assessment process and close monitoring of the safety and welfare of children and adults. Going into it, I only knew that Moiraine and Lan would be PoV characters and, liking both characters immensely, I was looking forward to seeing them one last time. New Spring: Survival is a open world zombie survival and crafting RPG where you are trying to stave off the hordes in a procedurally generated post-apocalypse. Essentially, “New Spring” is what you get if you take the backstory everyone already knew, and then used it as the skeleton for a workmanlike piece of prose.None of the major protagonists -- not Rand, not Mat, not Perrin, not Elayne, not Nynaeve, not Egwene, not Faile, not Loial, not Ishmael, not Min -- are present. There is a level of frustration a reader cannot truly understand until one has read all the books in one go and realised this amazing potential is never, ever acted upon. The first half of the book, aside from the Moiraine and Siuan being awesome characters, much of it was actually fairly boring.
The only thing that I appreciated in this first half of the book is FINALLY seeing what the test to become a full sister looked like. Edeyn was over thirty when Lan was fifteen and she took his virginity to be able to control many of his actions for life.
Shortly after this, Tamra and a number of Aes Sedai she had secretive meetings with die mysteriously, and a new Amyrlin is chosen. Lan's story through the novel follows moves made by his carneira, the Lady Edeyn Arrel, to raise support for him to regain the lands of Malkier, and to make Lan its King in more than just name. That is totally true here and the confrontation with the Black Ajah and the plots they hatched were the best aspect to this story. She tortures Lan--premeditatedly and on a nightly basis--b/c not realizing he was in the company of an Aes Sedai, he said to a friend (while she eavesdropped) that he'd prefer to avoid their company.
