About this deal

If focus has been achieved in close-focus mode (closer than one meter), the green light flashes slowly and the user knows to frame their picture with the parallax-corrected frame-lines in the VF. Known as the PRIMA SUPER 135 in Europe and Autoboy S (Super) II in Japan, The Z125 is another former point and shoot flagship model. The Ace can be a cheap introduction to shooting 35mm, or it may just be a compliment to your growing arsenal of film equipment. During my latest fling with the Sure Shot Zoom XL, I thought it would be fun to put it to the test, to prove or disprove Canon’s claims of parity between the lens of this old, chunky point and shoot and those of its SLR-mounted contemporaries.

I think the Canon Sure Shot Supreme is a great camera to take on trips and travelling as it is quite compact and the results are reliable. But if given to the viewer intimately in a small print, zine, or on a phone, the whole presents itself. As I shoot street photography, I like a camera that doesn’t get in my way as I try to capture scenes that are here now but won’t be a second later. It is essentially like a restyled version of the 1997 Sure Shot AF-7/Sure Shot Owl and carried on the characteristic large viewfinder (hence sold under the Owl name in the US).It has come to the point in my life where I am the ‘camera guy’ to family and colleagues; I will not lie to you, I have brought this on myself, and knew it would happen.

Users who own Sure Shot Tele models equipped with the Date Back will also find their date controls on the back of the camera, positioned in the usual spot, center of the film door. While the Yashica is arguably the better (and more expensive) camera, the Canon has the superior waist-level, both in size and in that the focus point is clearly marked on the screen. The camera's mode dial option to disable flash reminds me of the Canon Sure Shot Sleek (aka Prima Mini II) which also has this mode dial function and which I have but haven't put a film through it yet. The relatively quick aperture (for a point and shoot) allows for decent low light shooting and surprisingly good subject isolation at certain focal lengths. I also have a Minolta AF50 Big Finder, which lives up to its name and from memory I think is comparable in size and clarity to the Canon. As I’ve said, it was free anyway, and the film was very cheap – so what did it matter if the snaps didn’t come out very good?

Disclaimer: Etsy assumes no responsibility for the accuracy, labelling, or content of sellers' listings and products. My camera is clearly marked “Sure Shot AF-7”, but if you google that, you’ll most likely come up with a similar but definitely different-looking camera. plus the Minolta also had a more interesting character to the photographs, in my experience with them both. But it depends if you’d rather have the extra reach to be there for everyday pictures – within the 38-115 range you shouldn’t be able to see any difference. Perhaps they were unimpressed by the user experience; the viewfinder is smaller, darker and more flare-prone than it should be, and some of the useful mode buttons are hidden by a fiddly plastic flap on the back of the camera.

The spec beyond is pretty rubbish with a smallest aperture of f/11 and fastest shutter of 1/160 you might want to be careful about picking 400 ASA if you’re off to the beach. And indeed these features weren’t often found on competitor cameras, especially those in the consumer-oriented point-and-shoot segment. Within the image area are the AF frame, zone focusing marks for near, medium, and far distances, parallax correction marks, and battery check and camera-shake warning.
