About this deal

Rich chocolate desserts such as chocolate torte need an equally rich wine – ideally, one with plenty of body and fruit flavours to avoid either being overpowered.

People often stick to the red wine they have been drinking with their main course when they get to their dessert but this is in most cases a mistake as they soon find out.If you opt for Port, choose a nutty Tawny like Andresen Royal Choice 20-Year-Old Tawny Port – one of the best wines for Christmas pudding to try this year. We all know this traditional dessert can be incredibly sweet and already quite boozy on its own – especially if you’ve been feeding it with brandy – so a nice chilled glass of light-bodied Moscato is rather refreshing. The dried apricot, honey and sweet biscuit flavours of botrytis-affected Sémillon make it a sublime match for many cakes and desserts.

Tawny Port is a lighter style of the famous Portuguese fortified wine, displaying flavours of toffee and caramel, and even its own chocolate notes after a little ageing. Some chocolate fans enjoy it paired with a rich, full-bodied red wine, but our favourite choice is Royal Tokaji 5 Puttonyos 2017. Be careful with this step, the water is boiling and over enthusiastic mashing will cause splashes of hot liquid! Serving Suggestion: Pour into a pan and heat at a low temperature until the wine is simmering gently. If you fancy a small glass of white wine with your Christmas Pudding rather than a glass of sparkling, then this is the way to go.Both styles display notes of caramel, making them ideal with caramelised fruit and tropical fruit-flavoured desserts, such as pineapple upside-down cake or tarte tatin. And of course there is always dessert wine like Sauternes which will pair well with most desserts and – perhaps more surprisingly – with blue cheeses like Roquefort (and with foie gras for those with a preference for more savoury dishes). Fortified wines are wines that have had a spirit such as brandy added to them to boost alcohol content and overall sweetness. After 7 days of your wine fermenting in the primary vessel, strain off the juice into a demijohn and let it ferment further. So, think lightly sweet wines with with subtly sweet desserts, and save your sweeter wines for richer desserts.

No matter what the occasion there is always a dessert wine to match, and finding your perfect combination is all part of the fun. But the best all-rounder wine with meringue desserts is the light, fresh and frothy Acquesi Moscato d’Asti sparkling wine from Italy.

If you are looking for an alternative to the standard mulled wine then I urge you to give this one a go. Decadence in a bowl, chocolate mousse’s deep flavours need a wine that can stand up to that intensity but also complement the mousse’s light, airy texture. What better way to say “I Love You” than by sending your loved one something special from Beers of Europe! Crafted with the utmost care by Lyme Bay Winery, it is a deliciously warming wine that embodies the character of a classic Christmas pudding.
