About this deal
My thematic-game-loving friends aren’t excited about another game of trading in the Mediterranean, and even though the map looks great on the table and the wooden goods pieces are shaped and not cubes, there’s something that still strikes them as boring about Concordia.
Without that small bit of influence over the random setup the game would drag a lot in the beginning. And even this is positive interaction: you’re grateful to another player for opening production to you again, even though they receive a benefit from it. Concordia isn’t as interesting as a race to empty the card market or build your 15th house with a single opponent. How you push these limits and make the most of your actions will determine your successes in Concordia. It plays brilliantly with all numbers due to the two sides to the board due to the two different sized boards (smaller board for fewer players). Concordia Digital does a lot of the heavy lifting here by using icons to represent each of the card’s powers. There’s not quite as much deck honing or cycling as a “real” deckbuilder like Dominion or Star Realms, and it’s part of a larger game construction, but it’s clearly the same mechanism. A particularly unlucky player may pay highly to place their houses, but generally they will have an advantage elsewhere. Taunting your lack of foresight is the tribune card, which lets you shuffle your discard pile back into your hand.
Hard, as in, you’re going to know that you’re playing poorly throughout the game because you just didn’t have enough knowledge or enough foresight to plan as precisely or as deeply as you should have. This running tally is in contrast to the physical game where VP are not tallied until the very end of the game leaving you in suspense as to how well you and your opponents are doing however the inclusion of a toggle option to provide this information throughout will suit some players and can be a big aid for beginners learning how to play and score well. In fact, throughout this box is a level of attention to detail that puts most other game publishers to shame. All players can place a house in the same city, but the cost increases with every house already there. It’s actually within the scoring of the game where I find what I believe the biggest room for improvement with the app version of Concordia. Concordia: Digital Edition is a turn-based strategy game where 2 to 6 players face each other in the fight for wealth and influence. Always be prepared to make a trade-off - your actions can very well benefit other players as well as yourself.
