About this deal

Both teams will draw a Code Card and the current codegiver for the active team will look at it and show nobody else. One player will take a card with the 3 digit code (a combination of the 4 numbers on the code screen); they will need to give their teammates a coded message so they can figure out what the 3 digit number may be. As a member of the greatest Encryptor team in the world, your mission is to give your teammates precise clues that will help them decipher the codes, but you must also keep them vague enough to keep your opponents guessing. I think my issue with Codenames is that it’s often used as a blunt instrument for 6 – 10 people, and that means that there are a lot of people without a clear purpose in that game.

The rounds continue until a team collects either its second white mark (winning the game) or its second black mark (losing the game). Decrypto is a fascinating communication game where teams compete against each other to relay information to each other while not allowing the other team to intercept that same message. Both teams put up a cardboard screen into which they slot four secret words, words the opposing team will never see. You’re not just giving or receiving clues; you’re getting pieces of a mosaic and you need to make sure you’re spending some time trying to see the forest for the trees. to send, you might encrypt it by saying to your team: "sand, scoot, secret" and they'd associate the words with the positions and read out the number. Before the Encryptor's team can guess the code, the opposing team has a chance to do so following the first round. Sure, they set up later rounds for success or failure, but in and of themselves, the first round or two should be smooth for most teams in most sessions of Decrypto. If you are looking for a real challenge (and to kick in the “We think we know your keyword” mechanism), you use the modifier to describe ALL of your keywords that round.

From the second round onward, after a clue-giver reads their clues, the opposing team gets a chance to guess the code prior to the active team making their guess. But when that group is around, this is one I would always suggest playing (at nearly every possible opportunity). Doing that without throwing off your own team is nigh impossible, but, I mean, it’s either that or lose, so … have fun figuring out that strategy? And each turn they’re hearing more and more, collecting clue after clue, so the next time they hear a clue they think is related to “Warm” or “Sunny,” they can guess that it refers to the number 1. The game comes with plenty of sheets on the pads for players to track information and these are nicely laid out with lots of places to track the clues from the opposing team. Also if you look at that gamefound, it's easy to be deceived---the actual gameplay portions are not cheap but aren't over the top expensive.

A midwest Native (by way of Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Austin) currently residing in Boise, Idaho, Scott spends his days working in project management and spreadsheets aplenty. That said, it makes a great gift, and I think it’s a hoot to play, so if you’re looking for another team deduction game that’s a solid fit for a board game night, I’d highly recommend checking out Decrypto! If they're correct, they receive a white mark of success; if not, then my team must guess the number correctly or take a black mark of failure. Collect two laser drive tokens and you can trade them in to try to guess one of the opposing teams Keywords.
